What 0x is
0x was founded by Will Warren and Amir Bandeali around a question that seemed niche at the time: if tokens were going to live on Ethereum, how would people trade them without handing custody to an exchange? Their 2017 white paper proposed an open protocol where orders are signed off-chain and only settled on-chain, keeping trades cheap and letting anyone build a marketplace on shared plumbing.
Over the years the project shifted from being a protocol that exchanges plugged into toward being the routing layer many wallets and apps call when a user taps "swap". Today 0x offers a Swap API that searches liquidity across many sources and chains to find a route, so a single request can return a quote drawn from several markets at once. Much of this work happens out of sight: people often use 0x without ever seeing its name.
ZRX gives holders a voice in how the protocol evolves. Governance proposals, known as ZEIPs, are discussed in public and put to a ZRX vote, and holders can delegate their voting power. The project's long-term bet is that token trading should be a shared public utility that any app can use.
For a buyer, ZRX is an ERC-20 token. It can be held in any Ethereum wallet and used for voting through 0x's governance tools.
