How to Buy Filecoin (FIL)
Filecoin is a decentralised storage market: people pay storage providers in FIL to keep data, and the network checks cryptographically that the data is really being kept.
What Filecoin is
Filecoin was designed by Protocol Labs, the team behind IPFS, and described in its 2017 whitepaper. IPFS makes it easy to address and share files by their content, but it does not guarantee that anyone keeps storing them. Filecoin adds that missing piece: an incentive layer that pays providers to hold data and penalises them if they stop.
Two proofs do the work. Proof-of-Replication shows that a provider has stored a unique physical copy of the data, not just a pointer to someone else's copy. Proof-of-Spacetime shows, repeatedly over time, that the copy is still there. Providers must lock FIL as collateral, which they can lose if they fail those checks, so they have a direct reason to stay reliable.
FIL has several jobs: clients pay for storage with it, providers post it as collateral, and it pays for transactions. Since 2023 the Filecoin Virtual Machine has allowed smart contracts on the network, including EVM-compatible ones, so storage deals and data can be controlled by programs instead of only by hand.
