USDC vs USDT: what's the difference?

USDC and USDT are the two largest US-dollar stablecoins. Both are designed to stay worth one dollar and both can be redeemed with their issuer, so for everyday transfers they behave almost identically. The real differences are who issues them, how their reserves are held and reported, where they are regulated, and which blockchains they run on. Here is a side-by-side comparison, followed by how to swap from one to the other.

Issuers and reserves

USDT is issued by Tether and launched in 2014, making it the oldest stablecoin still in wide use. Its reserves are held mostly in US Treasury bills, with smaller allocations to other assets, and Tether publishes quarterly attestation reports from an independent accounting firm.

USDC is issued by Circle and launched in 2018. Its reserves are held in cash and short-dated US Treasuries, most of them in a government money-market fund managed by BlackRock, and Circle publishes monthly independent attestations alongside a weekly reserve breakdown.

Regulation

In the European Union, stablecoins offered to the public fall under the MiCA regulation. Circle issues USDC in the EU under a French electronic-money licence, so EU-regulated platforms can list it. USDT is not a MiCA-authorised token, which is why some EU platforms offer it only to customers outside the EEA. Elsewhere, both remain widely available.

Networks and fees

USDT's busiest network is TRON (TRC-20), popular for low-cost transfers; it is also native on Ethereum, Solana, TON and others. USDC is native on Ethereum, Solana and many Ethereum layer-2 networks such as Base and Arbitrum, and Circle no longer supports it on TRON. The same token on two networks is not interchangeable — always send on the network the receiving address expects. Our USDT TRC-20 to ERC-20 guide explains why.

How to swap USDC to USDT (or back)

  1. Check which network your USDC or USDT is on, and which network the receiving wallet uses.
  2. Open the swap, choose the coin and network you're sending and the coin and network you want.
  3. Compare the live quotes, paste your receiving address and send the deposit.
  4. The provider pays out to your wallet, usually within minutes.

USDC vs USDT: FAQ

Is USDC or USDT better?

Neither is better for everyone. USDT has the most trading pairs and is the default on TRON, where transfers are cheap. USDC is often preferred where regulated issuance matters — for example in the EU under MiCA — and is native on many Ethereum L2s. Pick the one your destination platform and network support.

Are USDC and USDT always worth exactly $1?

Both aim for 1:1 with the US dollar and are redeemable with their issuers, but the market price can drift by a fraction of a cent, and briefly by more during market stress.

Can I swap USDC to USDT without an account?

Yes. SwapRocket compares live USDC to USDT quotes from connected providers and pays out to your own wallet — no SwapRocket account and zero added fees. Pick the right network on both sides before you send.

Can USDC or USDT be frozen?

Yes. Both issuers can freeze tokens held at specific addresses, typically in response to law-enforcement requests or sanctions. That is a property of centrally issued stablecoins, not of the network they run on.

Is USDC available on TRON?

No. Circle ended support for USDC on TRON in 2024. If you hold USDT on TRON and want USDC, swap it to USDC on a network Circle supports, such as Ethereum or Solana.
