How to Buy Stacks (STX)

Stacks is a network that adds smart contracts to Bitcoin. STX is its native token, used for fees and for Stacking, a way to lock STX and earn rewards paid in bitcoin.

What Stacks is

Bitcoin's own scripting language is deliberately limited. Stacks is a separate chain that anchors itself to Bitcoin so developers can build applications that read Bitcoin's state and settle their history on it, without changing Bitcoin itself.

Stacks uses a mechanism called Proof of Transfer. Instead of burning energy, miners on Stacks bid real bitcoin for the right to produce the next Stacks block. That bitcoin is not destroyed: it goes to STX holders who lock ("Stack") their tokens and help secure the network. That is why Stacking rewards are paid in BTC rather than in newly created STX.

Contracts on Stacks are written in Clarity, a language designed to be decidable: you can tell exactly what a program will do before you run it, and the code is published on-chain as written rather than compiled into bytecode. The Nakamoto upgrade in 2024 made Stacks blocks much faster and tied its finality to Bitcoin, so reversing a confirmed Stacks transaction would require reorganising Bitcoin too. The project's sBTC design is a way to move BTC into Stacks applications and back.

For a buyer, STX is a native coin on the Stacks chain. You need a Stacks-compatible wallet; if you plan to Stack, check the current minimums and cycle rules in the official documentation, because they change with network conditions.

How to buy STX step by step

  1. 1

Set up a wallet that can receive STX

Stacks mainnet addresses start with SP (or SM for multisig). Sending to an exchange may need a memo; a personal wallet does not. SwapRocket never holds your coins: they go straight to the address you enter.

  2. 2

Pick the coin you will swap from

Card and bank payments are temporarily offline, so you buy by swapping crypto you already hold, such as BTC or USDT. SwapRocket supports 1,000+ assets.

  3. 3

Check the network and paste your STX address

STX is delivered on the Stacks mainnet, not on Bitcoin or Ethereum. Use a wallet that supports Stacks.

  4. 4

Compare live quotes and send your deposit

The swap box compares live rates from several exchange partners, with zero added fees from SwapRocket. Send the exact deposit amount to the one-time address shown.

  5. 5

    Receive your STX

Most swaps complete in under 10 minutes, depending on network confirmations. If anything looks stuck, 24/7 live support can check the order with you.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How does Stacking pay rewards in bitcoin?

Stacks miners bid BTC to win each block. Under Proof of Transfer, that BTC goes to STX holders who lock their tokens to help secure the network.

What did the Nakamoto upgrade change?

It brought much faster Stacks blocks and tied their finality to Bitcoin, so undoing a confirmed Stacks transaction would require reorganising Bitcoin as well.

Can I buy STX with a card on SwapRocket?

Not right now. Card and bank payments are temporarily offline, so you buy STX by swapping another cryptocurrency, such as BTC or USDT.

Do I need an account to buy STX?

No. Crypto-to-crypto swaps need no account and no KYC from SwapRocket; you only enter the address that will receive your STX.

What fees does SwapRocket charge?

SwapRocket adds zero fees. The rate you see comes from the exchange partner, and the blockchain network charges its own transaction fee.

How long does a STX swap take?

Most swaps complete in under 10 minutes, depending on how quickly the networks involved confirm the deposit.
