What Cronos is

Cronos is best understood as a family of chains sharing one token. Cronos POS (formerly Crypto.org Chain) is a proof-of-stake chain built with the Cosmos SDK, focused on payments and staking. Cronos EVM is an Ethereum-compatible chain, also built on the Cosmos SDK, where developers can deploy the same Solidity contracts and use the same wallets as on Ethereum. CRO is the gas token on both.

Pairing Cosmos technology with EVM compatibility gives Cronos EVM access to the inter-blockchain communication protocol (IBC) that links Cosmos chains, while keeping it familiar to Ethereum developers. The Cronos team has also launched a zkEVM network, which uses zero-knowledge proofs and settles on Ethereum.

CRO holders can stake to validators on Cronos POS and take part in governance. CRO is also used across Crypto.com's products, which is where many holders first encounter it, but the chains themselves are public and permissionless.
