About ZKsync (ZK)

Layer-1 blockchain

ZKsync (ZK) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (ZK) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and ZK is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does ZKsync work?

The ZKsync network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. ZK is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is ZK used for?

ZK pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on ZKsync. Demand for ZK tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a ZK swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send ZK to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for ZK

Three offers are presented for every ZK exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for ZK

ZKsync settles on ZKsync Era. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Banks want the speed and reach of public blockchains, but they cannot put client data on a ledger anyone can read. ZKsync's answer is zero-knowledge proofs: private environments that still settle to Ethereum. How does that work, and what role does ZK play?

ZKsync is a network of interoperable chains secured by zero-knowledge proofs and settling to Ethereum. It has increasingly focused on institutional finance, with a private chain product called Prividium. ZK is the network's only native asset, with a fixed supply of 21 billion and a central role in governance. This profile uses ZKsync's official site and documentation.

A network of ZK chains

ZKsync's documentation describes a network of interoperable chains secured by ZK — rollups connected through a shared Ethereum bridge. Teams can launch their own chain with the ZK Stack, an open-source framework the site describes as building customisable, enterprise-grade ZK blockchains that interoperate natively and inherit Ethereum's security.

A zero-knowledge proof lets one party prove a computation was done correctly without revealing all the underlying data. For a rollup, that means thousands of transactions can be verified on Ethereum through a single compact proof — the basis for both scaling and privacy.

The documentation lists the practical entry points: launching a chain locally with the ZK Stack CLI, building and deploying an app on any chain in the network, and browsing a chain list of every network already connected.[1], [2]

Built for institutions

The token page sets out the problem ZKsync is targeting. Even after the U.S. moved to T+1 settlement in 2024, capital is still locked between trade and settlement, with large sums sitting in correspondent banking accounts. A decade of blockchain pilots, the page argues, produced no production standard: private chains lack reach, public chains expose data, and consortia require trusting a central operator.

ZKsync says institutions need four things at once: privacy, institutional control, neutral settlement and cryptographic enforcement. Its answer is Prividium: each institution runs its own private, self-governed zone that settles to Ethereum through ZK proofs. Privacy is proven by mathematics rather than enforced by policy, and the zones together form one network.

The homepage lists case studies that show this in practice: BitGo and ZKsync powering bank adoption of tokenized deposits, Cari Network bringing tokenized deposits to the U.S. banking system, and ADI Chain, described as the first institutional L2 for stablecoins and real-world assets in the Middle East and North Africa. For cross-border payments, the site cites roughly one-second network hops and minutes-to-Ethereum finality.[3], [4], [5], [6]

Where ZK fits

The token page is direct: ZK is the protocol's only native asset, with a fixed supply of 21 billion and no inflation. It powers governance and is used by ZKsync Governance to vote on protocol upgrades and initiatives.

ZK launched with what the page calls a stem-cell design: governance can expand the token's economic function into new models as the network scales. The allocation shown is 29.3% ZKsync Governance, 19.9% ZKsync Foundation, 17.5% airdrop (fully liquid) and 33.3% investors, advisors and team, distributed through capped minters rather than a pre-minted treasury.

Governance is split across three bodies: the Token Assembly, where holders vote; the Security Council, which technically reviews upgrades; and the Guardians, an emergency safeguard. The page stresses that no single body controls the protocol.

That separation is deliberate. Holders set direction, technical experts review what actually ships, and an emergency body can step in if something goes wrong — a structure intended to keep upgrades both accountable and safe as the network carries more institutional value.[7], [8], [9], [10]

How the token's role expands

The stem-cell design means ZK's economic function can grow through governance. Which new roles it will take on, and when, is UNKNOWN from official sources and not predicted here.[8]

What this means when you hold or move ZK

ZK circulates on the ZKsync network. Confirm which network your receiving wallet or service expects before sending; a deposit on the wrong chain may not credit.

Voting in ZKsync governance happens through its own governance tools and is optional. Keep your transaction ID until delivery.

Is swapping ZKsync on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends ZK to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does ZK use here?

SwapRocket supports ZKsync on the ZKsync Era network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap ZK?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the ZK amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
