About Plasma (XPL)

Layer-1 blockchain

Plasma (XPL) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (XPL) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and XPL is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does Plasma work?

The Plasma network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. XPL is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is XPL used for?

XPL pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Plasma. Demand for XPL tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a XPL swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send XPL to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for XPL

Three offers are presented for every XPL exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for XPL

Plasma settles on Plasma. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

What would a blockchain look like if it were built for digital dollars first and everything else second?

Most blockchains started as general-purpose computers and picked up stablecoins along the way. Plasma turns that around. Its documentation opens with a history lesson: banks were built around branches, card networks around merchants, PayPal around the web. Plasma's bet is that stablecoins are the next constraint to design around, and that the network moving them should be built for that one job.

Starting from a history lesson

Plasma's own introduction doesn't lead with block times or throughput. It argues that every big financial network was shaped by the limits of its era. Branches shaped banks, merchants shaped card networks and the web shaped PayPal. Stablecoins remove some of those limits, because dollars can now move globally, programmatically and at any hour. The team describes Plasma as a stablecoin-native financial network built for that world.

The documentation is candid about the problem it wants to solve. Moving a token is easy. Building something people use as money every day is not. A real payment product needs accounts, settlement, liquidity, compliance controls, gas abstraction, fiat connections, cards and merchant acceptance, and today those pieces are spread across many wallets, chains, custodians and vendors. Plasma's pitch is to bring them together under one system.[1], [2]

A product and a chain, launched together

One unusual thing about Plasma is that it doesn't present itself as only a chain. The documentation describes a product and a network working together. Plasma One is the flagship: a global dollar account where people and businesses can deposit stablecoins, send instantly, earn on eligible balances and spend with a Plasma card. The Plasma network is the layer 1 underneath it.

The thinking is that a chain with its own consumer product in front of it has a better chance of reaching ordinary users than one waiting for others to build. The same infrastructure is also meant to support other card programs, merchant payments, payroll, remittances and business payouts.[3], [4]

Borrowing Ethereum's engine, replacing its clock

Under the hood, Plasma splits the work in two. Execution runs on a client based on Reth, a modern Ethereum engine written in Rust, so contracts and opcodes behave as they do on Ethereum. Developers can use the tools they already know, such as Foundry, Hardhat and standard wallets.

The consensus layer is where Plasma changes things. PlasmaBFT is a pipelined version of the Fast HotStuff algorithm. Instead of running proposal, vote and commit one after another, it overlaps them, and the team says finality is deterministic and typically reached within seconds. For a payment network that matters: a shop wants to know a payment is final, not that it is probably final.[5], [6]

The quiet ambition: fees you never see

The most practical idea in Plasma's documentation is also the least flashy. Plasma is building a protocol-maintained paymaster that will let apps accept whitelisted tokens, such as stablecoins, as gas. The documentation stresses that this paymaster is maintained by the protocol and charges no fee of its own.

If it works as described, someone sending digital dollars wouldn't need to hold XPL at all. The documentation calls fee abstraction one of the biggest barriers to everyday use in crypto, and says most standard transactions already cost less than one cent. It is a telling choice for a network's own token: part of the design goal is that everyday users don't need to touch it.[7], [8]

Where XPL fits

XPL is still what secures the network. It pays validators and rewards those who stake, which the documentation compares to BTC on Bitcoin or ETH on Ethereum. The initial supply was 10 billion XPL at the mainnet beta launch on September 25, 2025. Forty per cent went to ecosystem and growth, 25% to the team, 10% to the public sale, and the rest to investors including Founders Fund, Framework and Bitfinex.

Two details show the long-term thinking. Validator rewards are planned to start at 5% annual inflation and step down by 0.5% a year to 3%, but only once external validators and delegation go live. And, following Ethereum's EIP-1559 model, base fees are burned, so heavier use offsets some of the new issuance. Locked team and investor tokens don't earn staking rewards.[9], [10], [11]

What the official sources leave open

UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed documentation doesn't name Plasma's founders or tell the story of how the team formed. The project speaks as a company rather than through named individuals.

The consensus documentation says Proof of Stake and committee formation are still under active development, and the custom gas token paymaster is described as being built. How far those plans are live today should be checked in Plasma's current documentation.[12], [7]

What this means when you hold or move XPL

XPL is the native coin of the Plasma network, which is EVM-compatible. Check which network your receiving wallet expects before you send, because XPL on Plasma and any bridged or wrapped version elsewhere are not interchangeable.

Team and investor unlocks follow published schedules. One-third of team tokens have a one-year cliff that ends on September 25, 2026, and US public-sale buyers unlock on July 28, 2026. If you plan to hold, it helps to know those dates.
