About Solana (SOL)

Layer-1 blockchain

Solana (SOL) is a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain designed for speed and very low fees, processing thousands of transactions per second. SOL is the network's native coin, used to pay fees, stake, and power its ecosystem.

How does Solana work?

Solana combines proof-of-stake with a unique 'proof-of-history' mechanism that timestamps transactions, letting validators agree on ordering quickly. This architecture is what enables its high throughput and sub-cent transaction costs.

What is SOL used for?

SOL pays network fees, can be staked for rewards, and is the base asset across Solana's busy DeFi, NFT, memecoin, and payments scene. Its low costs make it popular for high-frequency trading and consumer-facing apps.

How to buy or swap SOL on SwapRocket

How a SOL swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send SOL to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for SOL

Three offers are presented for every SOL exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for SOL

Solana settles on Solana. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

What can a blockchain do differently when it gives validators a verifiable clock before asking them to agree?

Solana's central engineering idea is Proof of History: a sequential record that lets participants verify that time passed and events occurred in a particular order. The network combines that clock with stake-weighted consensus, a rotating leader schedule, parallel transaction execution and a data-propagation system designed for high throughput. SOL is the native resource tying those parts together through fees, account funding and validator staking.

A clock made from sequential computation

Distributed networks cannot simply consult one trusted clock. Solana's whitepaper proposes a continuous sequence in which each hash depends on the preceding output. Producing a later point requires performing the intermediate work in order, while checking the completed sequence can be divided and performed efficiently. Data mixed into that sequence gains a verifiable position relative to earlier and later outputs.

Proof of History does not decide by itself which transaction history wins. It supplies an ordering reference used by the rest of the protocol. Validators still vote through Tower BFT, a stake-weighted consensus process whose lockouts become stronger as votes build on one another. The clock reduces repeated coordination over timing, while validator votes determine which fork receives commitment.[1], [2], [3]

Leaders schedule work before the slot begins

Solana divides time into slots and computes a leader schedule for an epoch. The scheduled leader ingests transactions, orders them through the Proof of History sequence and broadcasts entries to the network. Knowing the expected producer in advance reduces the need for every validator to compete to propose each block and lets transaction forwarding prepare for upcoming leaders.

Validators replay the entries, execute transactions and vote on the resulting forks. Their consensus influence is weighted by delegated stake. SOL holders can delegate to a validator without giving that validator authority to spend the delegated principal, while the validator's vote account records consensus votes and associated rewards. This joins token staking to the clocked transaction pipeline without making Proof of History a separate coin or chain.[4], [5], [6]

Transactions declare their working set

Solana transactions identify the accounts they read or modify. The Sealevel runtime can therefore recognise transactions whose writable accounts do not overlap and schedule their instructions in parallel. Instead of assuming every contract call might touch any global state, the account list exposes enough information for the runtime to separate compatible work before execution.

Programs are stateless executable accounts; mutable application data lives in other accounts passed to them. A single transaction can invoke several instructions and is atomic: if one instruction fails, the transaction's state changes do not partially remain. This structure supports composition while preserving the information the runtime needs for parallel scheduling.[7], [8], [9]

Moving block data without one giant broadcast

A fast producer also needs to distribute data fast enough for validators to verify it. Turbine breaks block data into smaller packets and sends them through a tree of peers rather than requiring the leader to maintain a full-bandwidth connection to every validator. Erasure coding adds recovery information so recipients can reconstruct data despite some missing packets.

The ledger then distinguishes several commitment levels. A processed transaction has been observed by a node, a confirmed transaction has received the required voting support, and a finalized transaction sits in a block that has reached the network's strongest commitment. Applications choose the level appropriate to their need instead of treating every early observation as equivalent.[10], [11]

The trade-off behind performance

A protocol designed to use bandwidth, memory, fast storage and parallel processors can process more activity as capable hardware improves. It also asks more of a validator than a deliberately low-throughput chain intended to run on modest equipment. Solana publishes substantial hardware and network recommendations, making that choice visible to prospective operators.

Parallel execution is strongest when transactions touch different writable accounts. Highly popular applications can still compete for the same state, which is why Solana supports local fee markets that price contention around particular writable accounts. The architecture raises the ceiling and narrows congestion, but it does not make shared resources infinite.[12], [13]

What this means when you swap SOL

SOL is native to Solana and pays transaction fees. Use a destination that explicitly supports the Solana network; an Ethereum address or a token representation on another chain is not interchangeable with native SOL. A receiving application may also create or use separate token accounts for non-native assets, although ordinary SOL itself sits in the system account balance.

Confirmation can be rapid, but services may wait for confirmed or finalized commitment before crediting a deposit. Keep enough SOL for the outgoing fee and verify the full address. Delegated SOL may need to be deactivated and become available according to epoch timing before it can be sent into a swap.
