About Wrapped BTC (Ethereum) (WBTC)

Crypto token

Wrapped BTC (Ethereum) (WBTC) is a crypto token on the ETH network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.

How does WBTC work?

Wrapped BTC (Ethereum) runs as a token on the ETH network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.

What is WBTC used for?

Holders use WBTC to participate in the Wrapped BTC (Ethereum) ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a WBTC swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send WBTC to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for WBTC

Three offers are presented for every WBTC exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for WBTC

Wrapped BTC (Ethereum) settles on ETH. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

How does a token on Ethereum let someone use bitcoin's value in Ethereum applications without moving bitcoin itself onto that chain?

WBTC is an ERC-20 token designed to represent bitcoin held in custody, so that Ethereum smart contracts can reference bitcoin's value without bitcoin's own network processing the transaction. The token was introduced in January 2019 by BitGo, Kyber Network and Ren, through a structure that separates who holds the underlying bitcoin from who approves new tokens and from who actually uses the token. That division is what makes WBTC useful inside Ethereum applications, and it is also the part a holder has to trust rather than verify directly on-chain.

A merchant-and-custodian model, not a bridge contract

WBTC does not move bitcoin across a technical bridge. It uses a merchant and custodian arrangement: a merchant completes the user-facing checks and requests that new WBTC be minted, while the custody structure receives the corresponding bitcoin before equivalent WBTC is issued on Ethereum. Burning reverses the process, with WBTC destroyed before bitcoin is released. The mechanism was set out in the project's original documentation and remains described in its operating guide.

Governance of who can act as a merchant, and of protocol changes, sits with WBTC DAO members rather than with a single company acting alone. Members vote on adding or removing merchants and custodians under published DAO rules. This makes WBTC a coordinated multi-party system layered on top of two separate ledgers, rather than a protocol that enforces redemption through code that Ethereum itself can verify.[1], [2], [3]

Custody is the part a smart contract cannot see

Once bitcoin is deposited, its safekeeping depends on WBTC's custody operations rather than on Ethereum's consensus rules. Ethereum can enforce that a WBTC token moves correctly between addresses under the ERC-20 standard, but it cannot verify by itself that an equivalent amount of bitcoin still sits in disclosed custody wallets. That link is published separately through a transparency dashboard that lets readers compare circulating WBTC supply with bitcoin reserves.

This is the structural trade a holder accepts: an ERC-20 balance that Ethereum applications can compose with directly, in exchange for reliance on a named custodian's operational and legal safeguards for the underlying asset. The project's public materials describe this custody relationship explicitly, rather than presenting WBTC as a trustless extension of Bitcoin's own security model.[4], [5], [6]

Why Ethereum applications wanted a bitcoin-denominated token at all

Bitcoin's own scripting language does not support the smart-contract functions that Ethereum decentralized finance applications rely on, such as arbitrary lending logic or automated market-making. Representing bitcoin's value as an ERC-20 token let lending markets, decentralized exchanges and collateral systems built on Ethereum accept bitcoin-denominated value using the same interface they already used for other Ethereum tokens.

That single interface is also what made WBTC portable across many independently built applications without each one needing custom bitcoin-handling code. A protocol that supports ERC-20 collateral generally can support WBTC without additional integration work, because the token behaves like any other balance defined by the standard, transferable and approvable through the same function calls.[6], [2]

Verification happens off the chain that holds the token

Because the backing bitcoin sits on Bitcoin's ledger while the token circulates on Ethereum, confirming that supply and reserves match requires checking two separate records: the WBTC smart contract's total supply on Ethereum and the custodian's disclosed bitcoin addresses or attestation reports. Neither ledger alone shows the full picture.

The project addresses this by publishing custodian bitcoin addresses and periodic attestations intended to let anyone compare token supply against disclosed reserves. That published process is what a user, exchange or auditor relies on when treating WBTC as backed one-to-one, rather than any property Ethereum's protocol enforces automatically.[5], [4]

The trust the token still asks for

WBTC's design solves a real interoperability problem — using bitcoin-denominated value inside Ethereum's smart-contract environment — by introducing custodial and governance trust that a native, single-chain asset does not require. Minting and burning depend on merchants and a custodian following the published process correctly, and on WBTC DAO members maintaining that structure as intended. None of this is enforced by Bitcoin's or Ethereum's consensus rules directly.

Control over who serves as custodian and merchant, and how governance of the DAO is structured, has been a live subject of public discussion among WBTC's participants as the arrangement has evolved since 2019. Anyone relying on WBTC for meaningful value is ultimately trusting that the disclosed custody and governance arrangement, whoever administers it at a given time, continues to match what is published.[3], [5]

What this means when you hold or swap WBTC

Treat WBTC as an ERC-20 claim backed by custodied bitcoin, not as bitcoin itself. Before relying on it for anything beyond a quick trade, check the current proof-of-reserves disclosure and confirm which entity currently serves as custodian, since that detail is part of what backs the token and can change over time.

When swapping between BTC and WBTC, remember the two steps involved: a mint or burn through the merchant and custody process, or a market trade through an exchange that already holds both assets. Exchange trades settle faster but expose you to that venue's own liquidity and pricing, while direct mint or burn requests follow the custodian's documented procedures and timing.
