About Shiba Inu (SHIB)

Community / meme token

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a community-driven token that grew out of internet culture. Its value is propelled largely by an active community, social momentum, and speculative trading on the ETH network rather than a traditional product roadmap.

How does SHIB work?

SHIB is a standard token on the ETH network, so it transfers and trades like any other crypto asset. What sets it apart is its culture: holders rally around the brand, and liquidity and attention can shift quickly.

Is SHIB a good investment?

Meme tokens like SHIB are high-risk and highly volatile — prices can move sharply in either direction on sentiment alone. Many people buy SHIB for the community and the upside, but only with funds they can afford to lose.

How to buy or swap SHIB on SwapRocket

How a SHIB swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send SHIB to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for SHIB

Three offers are presented for every SHIB exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for SHIB

Shiba Inu settles on ETH. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

What does a community-run token do once it decides it wants its own settlement layer instead of just living on someone else's?

SHIB began as an ERC-20 token deployed on Ethereum, a straightforward standard that gives it transfers, balances and supply tracking identical in form to thousands of other tokens on the same network. What sets its ecosystem apart from a typical single-token project is that it grew a small family of related tokens and then built Shibarium, its own Ethereum-anchored layer-2 network, so that its ecosystem's day-to-day activity would not have to compete for space and fees on Ethereum's base layer. The useful way to understand SHIB today is as one token among several, sitting on infrastructure the project built specifically to support it.

An ERC-20 token like any other, with one large supply

SHIB is issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, which means it follows the same standard interface — balances, allowances and transfer functions — used by stablecoins, governance tokens and thousands of other assets on the network. That standardisation is what lets any Ethereum wallet or exchange that already supports ERC-20 tokens hold and move SHIB without custom integration work.

The token was launched with a very large total supply, a design choice that sets its per-token price far lower than assets with smaller supplies, though the two numbers describe the same underlying value divided differently. A portion of the original supply was later sent to a public Ethereum address associated with Bitcoin's creator, an action documented on-chain and publicly discussed as a supply-reduction gesture rather than a mechanism built into the token's contract itself.[1], [2]

Shibarium moves ecosystem activity to its own layer

Shibarium is a layer-2 network built to give the Shiba Inu ecosystem lower transaction costs and faster confirmation than transacting directly on Ethereum, while still anchoring its security to Ethereum. Its documented architecture follows a three-layer structure: Ethereum mainnet contracts handle staking and periodic checkpoints, a Heimdall layer manages the validator set and produces those checkpoints, and a Bor layer — fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine — produces the blocks that process everyday transactions.

Validators and delegators secure Shibarium by staking BONE, the network's staking and governance token, on Ethereum, and checkpoints of Shibarium's state are periodically submitted back to Ethereum so the layer-2 chain's history is anchored to a chain with an established validator set. Because Shibarium is EVM-compatible, contracts and tools built for Ethereum can generally be deployed there with little modification.[3], [4]

A family of tokens with different jobs

SHIB is not the only token in its ecosystem. LEASH is a separate ERC-20 token with a much smaller fixed supply than SHIB, and BONE functions as the governance and staking token used both on ShibaSwap, the ecosystem's decentralized exchange, and on Shibarium itself. Each of these tokens is deployed under its own contract address, and mixing them up when sending or receiving funds sends value to the wrong asset entirely, even though they share a common ecosystem and branding.

ShibaSwap's documentation describes a staking feature it calls 'burying,' in which holders lock SHIB, LEASH or BONE into smart contracts to earn rewards and receive a receipt token — xSHIB, xLEASH or tBONE respectively — representing their staked position. This is a standard locked-staking pattern, functionally similar to staking mechanisms used across other decentralized exchanges, applied specifically to this ecosystem's set of tokens.[9], [6]

Governance and ecosystem infrastructure

The Shiba Inu ecosystem has built out infrastructure beyond the core tokens, including a metaverse project, NFT collections and its own domain-name product, all documented on the project's official site. BONE's role as a governance token is tied to voting on proposals that affect the ecosystem's decentralized applications and, on Shibarium, to the staking that secures the network's validator layer.

This layered structure — a widely held ERC-20 token, a smaller companion token, a governance and staking token, and a purpose-built layer-2 network — reflects a project that expanded its own settlement infrastructure over time rather than staying a single token contract indefinitely. Each piece has a defined technical role, documented separately, rather than functioning as one undifferentiated brand.[9], [4]

The trade-off in building a dedicated layer-2

Running ecosystem activity on Shibarium instead of directly on Ethereum lowers transaction costs and increases throughput, but it also means users must bridge assets between Ethereum and Shibarium to move value across the two networks, adding a step and a contract dependency that a single-chain design would not require. Shibarium's security still depends on Ethereum through its checkpointing system, so the two networks' health remain connected rather than fully independent.

Holding several related tokens — SHIB, LEASH, BONE and their staked receipt tokens — gives holders more ways to participate in the ecosystem, but it also means more contract addresses and network destinations to verify correctly. A transaction sent with the wrong token contract or on the wrong network does not automatically convert into the intended asset.[3], [9]

What this means when you swap SHIB

SHIB is an ERC-20 token, so a SHIB deposit on SwapRocket expects an Ethereum-format address and, if the quoted route uses Shibarium, a matching Shibarium-network deposit rather than an Ethereum mainnet one. Confirm which network your specific quote specifies before sending, since Ethereum and Shibarium addresses can share the same hexadecimal format without being interchangeable destinations.

If your swap involves a related ecosystem token such as BONE or LEASH rather than SHIB itself, double-check the ticker and contract network shown in the quote, since these are separate assets with separate balances rather than denominations of the same token. As with any ERC-20 or layer-2 transfer, review the network fee and confirmation time shown for the specific chain your transaction will settle on.
