About Siacoin (SC)

Layer-1 blockchain

Siacoin (SC) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (SC) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and SC is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does Siacoin work?

The Siacoin network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. SC is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is SC used for?

SC pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Siacoin. Demand for SC tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a SC swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send SC to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for SC

Three offers are presented for every SC exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for SC

Siacoin settles on Siacoin. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Sia has been running decentralised cloud storage since 2015, splitting encrypted files across independent hosts. How does that work in practice, and what role does Siacoin play between the people storing data and the people renting out disks?

Sia is a peer-to-peer cloud storage network with no central provider: files are encrypted on the user's device, split into shards and spread across independent hosts. Siacoin (SC) is the network's currency — hosts earn it for providing storage. Development is supported by the non-profit Sia Foundation. This profile is built from sia.tech and the Sia docs.

What Sia says it is

Sia's homepage calls it "the world's safest cloud storage, by design". The documentation gives a plainer definition: Sia is decentralised, peer-to-peer cloud storage with no central provider and no gatekeepers, where files are encrypted on your own device before upload so that no storage provider can read them, and you hold the keys. The network is developed by a non-profit and runs on open-source software.

The about page frames the mission as protecting people's data and enabling privacy-preserving applications. It sets out a case against traditional storage — data held in one place by a single company, blind trust, limited competition, the possibility of data being sold or used to train AI, and the power to take files down — and positions Sia as the alternative.[1], [2], [3]

How it works

According to the homepage, Sia stores but never sees your data. Each file is split into small encrypted shards, which are shuffled and distributed across the decentralised network of hosts. Because pieces are spread across many machines, the site says retrieval can happen in parallel, making the system faster and more resilient to outages. The project recently published work on its own Reed-Solomon erasure-coding library, the technique that lets a file be rebuilt even if some hosts go offline.

The documentation describes different software for different roles. Everyday users can start with the Sia Storage app for iOS and Android, which offers a free 50 GB account. More technical users can run renterd or indexd to store data, hostd to provide storage and earn Siacoin, and walletd to hold and manage Siacoin. Developers can build on Sia through a developer portal and SDK, and S3-compatible integrations exist.

Sia's history is long by crypto standards. The about page says it was conceived at HackMIT in 2013 by Luke Champine and David Vorick, launched mainnet in 2015, reached one petabyte stored at a single time in 2018, created the Sia Foundation in 2020, and in 2025 shipped a major V2 overhaul of its software and protocol.[4], [5], [6], [7], [8]

What Siacoin is used for

Siacoin is the payment currency that links the two sides of the market. The docs direct anyone who wants to "provide storage and earn Siacoin" to set up hostd: hosts are paid in SC for storing other people's data. Users who store data pay for that capacity, and the walletd software exists specifically to hold and transfer Siacoin.

The Sia Foundation describes itself as a non-profit sustained by community donations, and the homepage reports grant funding allocated to projects built on the network. The docs also include a page on Siacoin's total supply, and the site links to MiCA indicators and a guide for exchanges wishing to list Siacoin.[9], [10], [11], [12]

Risks and open questions

Decentralised storage shifts responsibility to the user. Because files are encrypted on your device and you hold the keys, losing your seed phrase means losing access — there is no provider who can reset it. The docs devote a page to the importance of the Sia seed for this reason.

Host reliability varies, which is why Sia relies on redundancy across many hosts, and why community tools such as HostScore exist to benchmark them. The about page's claim that Sia has never had downtime is the project's own statement. As with any network upgrade, the V2 hardfork required users and hosts to update software.[13], [14], [15]

What the official sources do not say

UNKNOWN from official sources: the pages reviewed do not state the current total data stored on the network, typical storage prices in Siacoin, or how the free 50 GB tier in the Sia Storage app is funded over the long term.

Nothing here predicts the coin's future price or adoption.

What this means when you hold or move SC

Siacoin runs on Sia's own blockchain, not on Ethereum or another host chain. Only send SC to a Sia address — sending it to an address on a different network will not work. The Sia docs recommend walletd for holding Siacoin, and Ledger hardware wallets are supported through an integration listed in the docs.

Back up your Sia seed securely before moving funds. Keep your transaction ID until delivery so you can trace it on a Sia block explorer.

Zero added fees: SwapRocket does not add a platform fee, a minimum or a withdrawal charge — the rate you see is the rate you get. Blockchain network fees are shown in full before you confirm, and the final amount you receive is quoted up front.

SwapRocket does not add a separate fee or markup to the provider quote. SwapRocket may earn a commission from the liquidity provider when a completed swap is referred through our platform. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by SwapRocket. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

SC swap FAQ

How do I swap Siacoin (SC) instantly on SwapRocket?

Can I swap SC with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of SC. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping Siacoin on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends SC to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does SC use here?

SwapRocket supports Siacoin on the Siacoin network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap SC?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the SC amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
