About The Sandbox (SAND)

Crypto token

The Sandbox (SAND) is a crypto token on the ERC20 network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.

How does SAND work?

The Sandbox runs as a token on the ERC20 network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.

What is SAND used for?

Holders use SAND to participate in the The Sandbox ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a SAND swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send SAND to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for SAND

Three offers are presented for every SAND exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for SAND

The Sandbox settles on ERC20. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

The Sandbox grew from a 2D pixel-art game into a blockchain world of virtual land, user-made games and branded experiences. How does its economy fit together, and what is SAND needed for?

The Sandbox is a user-generated virtual world where creators build games and experiences with free tools, players explore them, and owners hold virtual LAND and other items as NFTs. SAND is its native currency, used for purchases, staking and governance. This profile is built from The Sandbox's official documentation; the main sandbox.game site blocked automated access when checked.

What The Sandbox says it is

The official documentation traces the project's history. Pixowl launched The Sandbox in 2012 as a 2D pixel-art game built to let creators share their content, and it went on to more than 40 million downloads. In 2018 Pixowl was acquired by Animoca Brands to build a 3D version, with the goal of becoming a new standard in world-building games — letting artists, storytellers and game designers of all skill levels create, publish, own and monetise content through blockchain technology.

Today the docs describe The Sandbox as a social experience platform: a decentralised universe of 166,464 virtual LANDs on the blockchain, created for and with the community, where NFTs "come to life in unique Experiences". Visitors can enjoy Play & Earn experiences made by the community and by hundreds of well-known brands and IPs, or build their own with free no-code tools. The docs quote Animoca co-founder Yat Siu: "You can't have digital freedom unless you have digital property rights."[1], [2], [3], [4]

How it works

The Sandbox economy is built around several kinds of token. LAND is virtual real estate — an ERC-721 NFT that lets its owner host and publish experiences on a specific spot of the map; groups of adjacent LANDs can form Estates for larger projects. Play & Create tokens cover avatars, experiences, in-game assets and passes, and Catalysts that raise an asset's rarity.

The docs describe a circular economy connecting three groups. Players buy avatars and equipment and may pay a small SAND fee or hold a specific NFT to enter some experiences. Creators sell voxel assets on the Marketplace or buy assets from others to speed up production, and can pay level designers and artists to collaborate. LAND owners host experiences and can earn extra rewards in a dedicated staking programme.

Players can earn Ethos Points in some experiences, which make them eligible to win SAND in contests and raffles; LAND owners can host contests with SAND and NFT rewards. SAND and LAND can both be bridged between Ethereum and Polygon, and the docs describe free transactions on Polygon that replenish over time for eligible wallets.[5], [6], [7], [8], [9]

What SAND is used for

The docs describe SAND as The Sandbox's native currency and main utility and governance token: an ERC-20 fungible token on Ethereum (also available on Polygon) with a maximum supply of 3 billion. It acts as the medium of exchange for buying NFTs — avatars, LAND, equipment, assets, passes and Catalysts — across the platform.

Beyond purchases, SAND is required to take part in governance of The Sandbox metaverse through The Sandbox DAO, and holders can stake it for rewards where local rules allow. LAND owners qualify for multipliers when staking SAND, depending on how much LAND they hold, and Premium LANDs can earn Gems used to make assets more valuable.[10], [11], [12], [13], [14]

Risks and open questions

The Sandbox's value depends on people actually visiting and building in its world. The docs point to many brand partnerships and community creators, but a virtual world needs sustained engagement for LAND, assets and experiences to stay useful. Staking and some reward programmes are offered only where local restrictions do not apply.

NFTs and tokens on two networks add operational care: bridging between Ethereum and Polygon uses The Sandbox Bridge, and the docs devote a section to avoiding scammers on Discord who target funds and NFTs — a reminder to use only official links.[15], [16]

What the official sources do not say

UNKNOWN from official sources: the pages reviewed do not state current active-player numbers, how many of the 166,464 LANDs host live experiences, the current SAND staking rates, or how DAO voting power is distributed.

Nothing here predicts the token's future price or adoption.

What this means when you hold or move SAND

SAND exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum and on Polygon. Before sending, confirm which network the receiving wallet or exchange expects — Polygon SAND sent to an Ethereum-only deposit address may not be credited. Ethereum fees are paid in ETH, Polygon fees in POL.

Only use bridge and marketplace links from The Sandbox's official documentation. Keep your transaction hash until delivery so you can trace it on the relevant explorer.

Can I swap SAND with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of SAND. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping The Sandbox on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends SAND to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does SAND use here?

SwapRocket supports The Sandbox on the ERC20 network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap SAND?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the SAND amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
