About THORChain (RUNE)
Layer-1 blockchain
THORChain (RUNE) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (RUNE) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and RUNE is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.
How does THORChain work?
The THORChain network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. RUNE is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.
What is RUNE used for?
RUNE pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on THORChain. Demand for RUNE tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a RUNE swap works
Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send RUNE to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.
Choosing a rate for RUNE
Three offers are presented for every RUNE exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.
Networks and addresses for RUNE
THORChain settles on THORChain. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

THORChain lets people swap native Bitcoin, Ether and other coins across chains without wrapped tokens. How does RUNE tie that together as the settlement asset, the security bond and the signal for which pools go live?
Moving value between blockchains usually means trusting a bridge that issues a wrapped copy of the original coin. THORChain takes a different route. It runs its own blockchain whose validators jointly control vaults on other chains, so a swap from Bitcoin to Ether moves the real coins on both sides. RUNE sits in the middle of every one of those swaps. This profile explains how, using THORChain's own documentation.
Native swaps, not wrapped copies
THORChain's documentation lists native swaps between major blockchains including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and BNB Smart Chain. The coin you send and the coin you receive are the real assets on their own networks.
THORChain describes itself as a full blockchain in its own right, similar in kind to Ethereum or Solana, rather than an app running on someone else's chain. That independence is what lets it hold assets from many networks at once.[1], [2]
RUNE as the settlement asset
Every liquidity pool on THORChain pairs an outside asset with RUNE, and the documentation names RUNE as the settlement asset for the network. A swap from one outside coin to another passes through RUNE on the way.
Because every pool shares that common side, the network can price and route any listed pair through the same simple design.[3]
Keys no single node holds
The vaults that hold outside assets are controlled with a threshold signature scheme. THORChain's documentation states that the private key is never stored in full on any single node; a group of validators must work together to sign.
This spreads control of the vaults across the validator set instead of placing it with one operator.[4]
Bonds that back the vaults
To run a validator, an operator must lock a large bond of RUNE, which the documentation puts at over 300,000 RUNE. The network aims for total bonded RUNE to be worth about twice the outside assets held in its pools.
A mechanism called the Incentive Pendulum shifts rewards between validators and liquidity providers to steer the system back towards that two-to-one balance. When bonds fall behind, validators earn more; when pools fall behind, liquidity providers do.[5], [6], [8]
Governance by nodes and by liquidity
Network settings are managed by validator nodes through a system called Mimir. Liquidity providers take part too: adding liquidity to a staged pool counts as a vote, and the deepest staged pools are the ones that become active.
That ties decisions about which assets the network supports to the people actually willing to provide liquidity for them.[7], [12]
A fully released, slowly shrinking supply
THORChain documents a maximum of 500 million RUNE and states that all vesting is complete, with no locked allocations left to release.
A portion of the fees the network collects is burned, which gradually reduces the supply of RUNE over time. Holders can follow the rules without waiting on future unlocks.[9], [10], [11]
How the balance holds over time
The Incentive Pendulum is designed to keep bonds and pools in proportion, and the ratio moves continuously as assets flow in and out. How closely it will track the two-to-one target through future changes in network activity is UNKNOWN from public sources.
It is not predicted here; the live figures can only be read from the chain itself.[6], [8]
What this means when you hold or move RUNE
SwapRocket lists RUNE on the THORChain network itself. Native RUNE addresses start with thor, so send it only to a wallet that supports native THORChain, not to an Ethereum or BNB Chain address.
Older wrapped versions of RUNE on other chains are not the same asset. Match the network in your quote to the receiving wallet, and keep the transaction ID until the swap completes.

RUNE swap FAQ
How do I swap THORChain (RUNE) instantly on SwapRocket?
Pick RUNE as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. SwapRocket hands your order to the provider whose quote pays out the most at that moment, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no SwapRocket account needed.
Can I swap RUNE with no KYC?
No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of RUNE. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.
Is swapping THORChain on SwapRocket non-custodial?
Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends RUNE to the wallet address you provide.
Which network does RUNE use here?
SwapRocket supports THORChain on the THORChain network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap RUNE?
SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the RUNE amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
