About Harmony (ONE)

Layer-1 blockchain

Harmony (ONE) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (ONE) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and ONE is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does Harmony work?

The Harmony network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. ONE is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is ONE used for?

ONE pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Harmony. Demand for ONE tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How to buy or swap ONE on SwapRocket

How a ONE swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send ONE to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for ONE

Three offers are presented for every ONE exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for ONE

Harmony settles on Harmony. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Can a blockchain split itself into pieces to go faster without letting any one piece become the weak spot?

Harmony's documentation opens with a mission statement rather than a spec sheet: "to scale trust and create a radically fair economy." Behind it is one of the earliest production attempts at a fully sharded proof-of-stake chain, and a staking rule designed to stop the richest validators from simply buying more influence.

A chain cut into four

Harmony's big idea is sharding, done more thoroughly than most. The mainnet runs four shards, and the documentation says it shards in three dimensions: state, network and transactions. Each shard keeps its own chain and state database, so a validator stores only a fraction of the global state. Transactions carry a shard_id field, and cross-shard transfers add a to_shard_id.

Blocks arrive every two seconds, and the documentation says cross-shard transactions finalise within two block times. Every 32,768 blocks, about 18.2 hours, an epoch ends and a beacon chain elects the committees for the next round.[2], [3]

Shuffling the guards

Sharding has a well-known weakness: an attacker might try to crowd into a single shard and take it over. Harmony answers with randomness. Validators are randomly assigned and reshuffled between shards using a distributed randomness process built on VRF and VDF, which the documentation calls unpredictable, unbiased and verifiable.

Resharding uses the "Cuckoo Rule", named after the bird that lays its eggs in other birds' nests, so the network can reshuffle without stopping. It's designed to defend against slowly adapting adversaries that pick their targets over time.[4], [5]

The median rule

The most distinctive idea is Effective Proof-of-Stake, or EPoS. In most staking systems, influence grows in a straight line with stake. Harmony caps it. A validator key's effective stake is held between 85% and 115% of the median bid. Stake above that band doesn't buy extra voting power; the documentation says large validators are expected to run more nodes instead.

The documentation describes this as a way to prevent stake centralisation while keeping what it calls capitalistic fairness. EPoS also supports delegation, reward compounding, double-sign slashing and checks on unavailable validators.[6], [7]

Two seconds and one signature

Harmony's consensus, Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT), is built on PBFT, which the documentation calls a cornerstone of distributed-systems research for three decades. FBFT speeds it up by collapsing validators' signatures into a single BLS aggregate signature of constant size. The documentation says at least 250 validators can reach consensus within two seconds.

The community side of the story has a name too. Harmony calls its node operators Pangaea, and the documentation describes volunteers and validators from more than 100 countries, many running a node for the first time.[8], [9]

What ONE does, and a path to zero issuance

ONE pays transaction fees, is staked or delegated to secure the network, and is the only token counted in Harmony's open governance votes. Its units mirror Ethereum's: the smallest is the Atto, and a Nano is a billionth of a ONE.

Harmony's updated economic model keeps the total network reward, meaning issuance plus fees, constant whatever the block time or staking ratio. The stated goals are a higher staking ratio, a simpler model and a path to zero issuance. On the strategy side, the documentation describes an early focus on cross-chain finance, with Harmony as a hub bridging to Bitcoin and Ethereum. Newer open-development notes from founder Stephen Tse point to AI agents and one-second finality.[10], [11], [12], [13]

What the official sources leave open

UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed documentation names Stephen Tse as founder but doesn't tell the story of how Harmony was started or who else was on the early team.

Some documentation pages, such as the node counts and the 2021 strategy, are older snapshots. Current validator and node figures should be checked on Harmony's live network tools rather than taken from those pages.[13], [9]

What this means when you hold or move ONE

ONE runs on Harmony's own mainnet, which is EVM-compatible. Tokens that were bridged to or from Harmony are separate assets from native ONE, so check the network and token contract before you send.

If you delegate ONE to a validator, remember that double-signing and downtime can be penalised under EPoS, and that undelegation isn't instant. Pick a validator you trust and read the current undelegation rules first.

Fees and pricing

Zero added fees: SwapRocket does not add a platform fee, a minimum or a withdrawal charge — the rate you see is the rate you get. Blockchain network fees are shown in full before you confirm, and the final amount you receive is quoted up front.

SwapRocket does not add a separate fee or markup to the provider quote. SwapRocket may earn a commission from the liquidity provider when a completed swap is referred through our platform. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by SwapRocket. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

ONE swap FAQ

How do I swap Harmony (ONE) instantly on SwapRocket?

Pick ONE as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. SwapRocket hands your order to the provider whose quote pays out the most at that moment, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no SwapRocket account needed.

Can I swap ONE with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of ONE. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping Harmony on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends ONE to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does ONE use here?

SwapRocket supports Harmony on the Harmony network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap ONE?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the ONE amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
