About OKB (OKB)

Layer-1 blockchain

OKB (OKB) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (OKB) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and OKB is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does OKB work?

The OKB network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. OKB is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is OKB used for?

OKB pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on OKB. Demand for OKB tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a OKB swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send OKB to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for OKB

Three offers are presented for every OKB exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for OKB

OKB settles on X Layer. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

OKB started as a utility token for the OKX exchange and is now the gas token of X Layer, OKX's Ethereum layer-2 network. What changed in 2025, why is its supply now fixed at 21 million, and what does that mean for people who hold or move it?

Exchange tokens are often shaped by the company behind them: supply can be adjusted, and value depends heavily on the platform's own decisions. In 2025 OKX changed OKB in a way that ties it more closely to a public network. It burned a large reserve of previously repurchased tokens, removed the contract's ability to mint or burn, and made OKB the single gas token of X Layer. The result is a token with a fixed supply that is spent every time someone uses the network. This profile explains the change using OKX's announcements, developer documentation and regulatory filing.

From exchange token to network gas

OKX's X Layer documentation lists OKB as the network's gas token, the coin used to pay for every transaction on the chain. X Layer is an Ethereum layer-2 network that OKX launched in 2023 in collaboration with Polygon, and its mainnet uses chain ID 196.

Paying gas in OKB links the token to real use: each transfer, swap or contract call on X Layer spends a small amount of it.[1], [2], [3], [8]

A 2025 upgrade to the network

OKX announced that X Layer had fully integrated the latest version of Polygon CDK, the toolkit it is built on, and completed its PP upgrade on August 5, 2025. The same announcement set out changes to how OKB works as gas.

The official X Layer documentation repository describes the network as a layer-2 powered by OKB and built with Polygon CDK, and publishes the developer material openly.[3], [7]

A fixed supply of 21 million

As part of the upgrade, OKX said it would permanently burn historically repurchased and reserved OKB through an on-chain smart contract, and phase out the older OKT token by converting it to OKB. OKX's help centre gives the schedule: the burn took place on August 15, 2025.

On August 18, 2025, according to the same schedule, the OKB smart contract was upgraded to remove its minting and burning functions. X Layer's developer documentation now describes OKB's supply as fixed at 21 million.[4], [1]

A long record of burns before the cap

Before the fixed cap, OKX ran a regular burn programme and published a report for each round. Its report for the 28th burn, completed on June 19, 2025, states that 42,437,632 OKB were burned in that event.

The one-time burn and contract change in August 2025 brought that programme to a natural end. With minting and burning removed, supply no longer depends on future company decisions.[5], [4]

Disclosure under EU rules

OKX has published a white paper for OKB in the format used under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets rules. It covers the token's rights and obligations, the technology behind it and the main risks, in a standard layout regulators use to compare assets.

Together with the developer documentation, this gives holders an official, structured description of what OKB is.[6]

Adjusting gas economics without mint or burn

With minting and manual burning removed from the contract, OKB's supply can no longer be used to adjust network economics. OKX's public documentation does not set out what mechanism, if any, would change X Layer's gas economics if fee demand or network costs shift significantly.

How that will be handled is UNKNOWN from current sources and is not predicted here.[4], [1]

What this means when you hold or move OKB

SwapRocket lists OKB on X Layer, an EVM network that uses standard 0x addresses and chain ID 196. OKX stopped OKB withdrawals to Ethereum's main network in August 2025, so check that the network in your quote is X Layer and that the receiving wallet or service supports it.

Keep a little OKB in the wallet to pay gas on X Layer. A swap provider sets its own confirmation policy before releasing the destination coin. Keep the transaction ID until the order completes, and back up your recovery phrase.

OKB swap FAQ

How do I swap OKB (OKB) instantly on SwapRocket?

Pick OKB as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. SwapRocket hands your order to the provider whose quote pays out the most at that moment, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no SwapRocket account needed.

Can I swap OKB with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of OKB. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping OKB on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends OKB to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does OKB use here?

SwapRocket supports OKB on the X Layer network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap OKB?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the OKB amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
