About NEO (NEO)

Layer-1 blockchain

NEO (NEO) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (NEO) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and NEO is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does NEO work?

The NEO network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. NEO is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is NEO used for?

NEO pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on NEO. Demand for NEO tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a NEO swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send NEO to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for NEO

Three offers are presented for every NEO exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for NEO

NEO settles on NEO. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Neo split governance and utility into two coins long before it was common. How do NEO, GAS, dBFT consensus and the chain's built-in services form its smart-economy stack?

Neo is a smart-contract platform that calls its vision the smart economy. Its signature design is a dual-token model: NEO carries governance rights and is indivisible, while GAS pays for using the network. Around that pair, Neo builds in services many chains leave to third parties — an oracle, distributed storage, a name service and a decentralized identity standard. This profile explains the design using Neo's official site and documentation.

Two tokens, two jobs

Neo was the first public blockchain platform to adopt a dual-token mechanism, separating the rights of governance from the rights of using the network. NEO is the governance token: holders participate in governance by voting for the Neo Committee, the body of members and consensus nodes that governs the blockchain, maintains the liveliness of the network and adjusts critical parameters.

GAS is the utility token. The Neo network charges GAS for the operation and storage of tokens and smart contracts, which prevents the abuse of node resources. System fees are burned, while network fees are redistributed to consensus nodes, creating an economic incentive for their services.[1], [2], [3]

An indivisible coin

NEO has a total of 100 million tokens, all generated at genesis, and its minimum unit is 1: NEO tokens are indivisible. That has a practical consequence the project itself spells out — if you withdraw NEO from an exchange to your wallet, you must withdraw in whole numbers.

Approximately half of the genesis supply was reserved by the Neo Foundation to incentivise the development of the ecosystem, with the release schedule set out in the Neo white paper. GAS, by contrast, is divisible down to 0.00000001, and 5 GAS are generated every block and distributed in three parts. No NEO staking is required to claim GAS; most Neo wallets include a claim function.[4], [5], [6], [7], [8]

Finality in a single block

Neo's consensus mechanism is dBFT, delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance, which the project says guarantees fast and efficient finality in a single block. Once a block is produced, transactions in it are final — there is no waiting for additional confirmations against reorganisations.

For payments and exchange settlement, one-block finality is a meaningful property: a confirmed transaction stays confirmed.[9]

Services built into the protocol

Neo provides a full stack of features out of the box. The built-in list includes an oracle for secured access to off-chain data, NeoFS for distributed data storage, a Neo Name Service offering decentralized .neo domain names, and NeoID, a set of self-sovereign decentralized identity standards. Interoperability features target cross-chain connection with Ethereum, BNB Chain and more.

The design philosophy is that native functionality provides all the infrastructure needed to build complete decentralized applications, while interoperability lets developers harness the broader ecosystem.[10], [11], [12], [13], [14], [15]

Contracts in languages developers already know

Neo's smart contracts can be written in C#, Go, Python, Java or TypeScript, a deliberate choice to meet developers where they are rather than requiring a chain-specific language. The official documentation is an exhaustive library of technical documents and development examples, from running a node to deploying a first contract.

The site shows working contract examples in Python and C#, underlining that multi-language support is a shipping feature, not a roadmap item.[16], [17]

N3 and the Neo X sidechain

After four years of stable MainNet operation, Neo migrated to N3, which the project calls the most powerful and feature-rich version of the blockchain to date. More recently, the ecosystem added Neo X, an EVM-based sidechain, giving Solidity developers a way into the Neo world.

Together, N3 and Neo X cover both of Neo's audiences: the native multi-language platform, and the much larger pool of EVM tooling.[18], [19]

How activity splits between N3 and Neo X

Neo now runs two environments: the native N3 chain and the EVM-compatible Neo X sidechain. How developer and user activity will divide between them over time is UNKNOWN from public sources.

It is not predicted here.[18], [19]

What this means when you hold or move NEO

SwapRocket lists NEO on the native Neo N3 network. Because NEO is indivisible, plan transfers in whole numbers — a quote for a fractional NEO amount cannot be delivered on-chain as a fractional transfer.

Neo addresses on N3 start with "N". If your wallet supports it, you can claim the GAS your NEO generates; either way, match the network in your quote to the receiving wallet and keep the transaction ID until the swap completes.

Zero added fees: SwapRocket does not add a platform fee, a minimum or a withdrawal charge — the rate you see is the rate you get. Blockchain network fees are shown in full before you confirm, and the final amount you receive is quoted up front.

SwapRocket does not add a separate fee or markup to the provider quote. SwapRocket may earn a commission from the liquidity provider when a completed swap is referred through our platform. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by SwapRocket. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

NEO swap FAQ

How do I swap NEO (NEO) instantly on SwapRocket?

Pick NEO as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. SwapRocket hands your order to the provider whose quote pays out the most at that moment, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no SwapRocket account needed.

Can I swap NEO with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of NEO. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping NEO on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends NEO to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does NEO use here?

SwapRocket supports NEO on the NEO network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap NEO?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the NEO amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
