About Terra Classic (LUNC)

Layer-1 blockchain

Terra Classic (LUNC) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (LUNC) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and LUNC is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does Terra Classic work?

The Terra Classic network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. LUNC is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is LUNC used for?

LUNC pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Terra Classic. Demand for LUNC tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a LUNC swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send LUNC to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for LUNC

Three offers are presented for every LUNC exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for LUNC

Terra Classic settles on Terra Classic. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Blockchains are usually steered by the team that launched them. What does it look like when a chain keeps running on its validators and community long after its founding company has stepped away, and what does LUNC do on it?

Terra Classic is the original Terra blockchain, a proof-of-stake network built with the Cosmos SDK. LUNC is its native staking and fee token. Since its founding company began winding down, the chain has continued under its validators and on-chain governance. This profile uses the Terra Classic documentation and Terra's official site.

The original Terra chain

The Terra Classic documentation describes the protocol as an open-source public blockchain designed around stablecoins that track fiat currencies, maintained through market arbitrage incentives and decentralised oracle voting. The network is organised into standard modules — authentication, bank, staking, distribution, governance, oracle and treasury among them — that anyone can read in the documentation.

In 2022 the Terra ecosystem split: a new chain took the Terra name, and the original network continued as Terra Classic, with its native token becoming known as LUNC. The classic documentation remains the reference for how that original chain works.[1], [2], [3]

A chain that outlived its founding company

Terra's official site states that Terraform Labs has been winding down since 30 September 2024. For many projects that would mean the end of development. Terra Classic, however, is a proof-of-stake chain secured by independent validators, and its rules can be changed through on-chain governance.

That makes Terra Classic an unusual case study in decentralisation: the network's future depends on the validators who produce blocks, the developers who maintain its software and the holders who vote on proposals, rather than on a single company.[4], [5], [6]

How fees and staking work

According to the classic documentation, every transaction on the network incurs a gas fee. Validators can set their own minimum gas prices, transactions are processed in the order received rather than by fee bidding, and unused gas is not refunded.

Every block, gas fees are sent to the reward pool and distributed by validators to their delegators as staking rewards. LUNC holders who do not run a validator can delegate to one through a compatible wallet and share in those rewards, the standard Cosmos staking model.[7], [8], [9], [10]

Tools the community still uses

The documentation covers the full toolset for the chain: the Terra Station wallet on desktop, browser and mobile for sending, staking and governance; the terrad command-line client; LocalTerra for running a private test network; and Terra.js and Terra.py software kits for developers.

It also covers CosmWasm smart contracts and inter-blockchain transfers, so builders can still deploy contracts and move tokens between Terra Classic and other Cosmos chains.[11], [12], [13]

Why the design is open to inspection

Because Terra Classic is built from standard Cosmos SDK modules, its behaviour is documented module by module: how accounts are authenticated, how balances move, how staking rewards are distributed, how misbehaving validators are penalised and how governance proposals pass. Anyone can read those descriptions and compare them with the running software.

That transparency is useful for a community-run network. Validators, developers and holders can debate proposed changes against a shared, public description of how the chain works today, and any change that passes governance is applied through the same documented upgrade process that every Cosmos SDK chain uses. It also means wallets and explorers built for the wider Cosmos ecosystem can support the chain with relatively little custom work.[2], [6]

Governance without a sponsor

With its founding company winding down, the pace and direction of Terra Classic's development rests on community governance and volunteer or independently funded maintainers. How sustainable that model proves over the long term is UNKNOWN from official sources.

It is not predicted here.[4], [6]

What this means when you hold or move LUNC

LUNC is the native token of the Terra Classic chain, which is a different network from the newer Terra chain and its token. Make sure your receiving wallet supports Terra Classic specifically and that the network shown in your quote matches it before you confirm.

Transfers to exchange or custodial addresses on Cosmos-style chains can require a memo, so check carefully before sending. Staking and governance votes happen through a Terra Classic compatible wallet, not through a swap, and taking part in either is optional. Keep your transaction ID until delivery so you can trace it on a Terra Classic block explorer.
