What Kusama says it is

Kusama's own homepage does not undersell the risk. It calls Kusama "Web3's untamed frontier" — wild, permissionless and fully sovereign — and describes it as the place where "code goes to get weird, break stuff, and maybe change everything". Its current emphasis is zero-knowledge (ZK) and other bleeding-edge technology, backed by a 10M DOT fund for builders. The site's own summary: "No safety nets. No promises."

The official wiki gives the more formal definition. Kusama is a canary network for Polkadot: an earlier release of the code that is available first and holds real economic value. For developers it is a proving ground for runtime upgrades, on-chain governance and parachains. The wiki's refrain matches the homepage: "Kusama is experimental. Expect Chaos."^{[1], [2], [3], [4]}

How it works

The canary idea comes from the old mining practice of sending a canary into a mine to detect danger early. On Kusama, new features and upgrades can be deployed and exercised under real conditions — with real value at stake — before or alongside their arrival on Polkadot. That makes problems visible in a live environment rather than only on a test network where tokens are worthless.

According to the wiki, Kusama is owned by those who hold KSM. There is no central kill switch; all changes are made through the protocol's on-chain governance. The network is permissionless, so anyone can use it. When Kusama launched, participants in the Polkadot sale could claim a proportional amount of KSM through the Kusama Claims process.

Users can take part in everything the network offers: staking as validators or nominators, governance, and basic transfers. What KSM is used for

The wiki states that KSM is the native token of the Kusama Network and can be used for transaction fees, staking, governance, purchasing coretime and enabling several other key functions. Coretime is the blockspace that projects buy to run on the network's shared security.

In governance, KSM is the voting asset of Kusama's OpenGov system: holders can vote, delegate their voting power, and place deposits for their own referenda or for referenda proposed by others. Staking KSM — as a validator or by nominating one — secures the network. The wiki also mentions Kusama Gifts, a way to send KSM to someone who does not yet have an address.^{[10], [11], [12], [13]}

Risks and open questions

Kusama's positioning is its main risk disclosure. The official sources repeatedly describe it as experimental and chaotic, and its role is precisely to be where untested code meets real value. Upgrades can move quickly, and governance changes happen on-chain through votes rather than by any central party.

KSM has an inflation model, documented separately in the wiki, which funds staking rewards; holders who do not stake are diluted relative to those who do.
