About Helium (HNT)
Layer-1 blockchain
Helium (HNT) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (HNT) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and HNT is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.
How does Helium work?
The Helium network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. HNT is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.
What is HNT used for?
HNT pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Helium. Demand for HNT tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a HNT swap works
Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send HNT to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.
Choosing a rate for HNT
Three offers are presented for every HNT exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.
Networks and addresses for HNT
Helium settles on Helium. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

What if the world's wireless network was owned by the people who plug in the boxes?
Mobile networks belong to carriers, and carriers belong to shareholders. Helium asked a different question: what if ordinary people put small radio boxes in their windows, and the network paid them for it? HNT is the token that makes that bargain work — and its economics, written down in unusual detail, read like a central bank's rulebook for a network with no central bank.
A network built one windowsill at a time
The Helium Network powers two wireless networks at once: a global LoRaWAN network for small internet-of-things devices, and a Wi-Fi network that offloads mobile phone traffic. Neither is run from a data centre. The coverage comes from 'Hotspots' — gateways operated by the community — and the people who run them are paid in HNT for providing coverage and carrying traffic.
It is a simple trade with a big implication. Telecoms spend billions on towers; Helium's bet was that thousands of individuals, each covering a few streets, could build something comparable out of spare capacity and earn a share of the network they built.[1], [2]
No pre-mine, and a clock that halved itself
The first HNT was emitted on July 29, 2019, and the documentation is explicit that there was no pre-mine — no tokens printed for insiders before the network launched. At launch the network targeted five million HNT per month.
Then the community approved HIP-20, which put the supply on a two-year halving schedule, like Bitcoin's but twice as fast. The plan implied a maximum supply of 240 million HNT — except reality intervened. Slow block times in the first year meant about 17 million fewer HNT were issued than scheduled, so the real maximum settled at roughly 223 million. The documentation publishes the full emission table, year by year, through 2028 and beyond.[3], [4], [5]
Burning coins to send data
HNT has a second life inside the network. To actually use Helium — to send data from a sensor or route phone traffic — you pay in Data Credits, a utility token pegged to the US dollar. And Data Credits are only produced one way: by burning HNT.
This is a design called burn-and-mint equilibrium. Usage destroys HNT; rewards create it. The idea is that the supply responds to how much the network is actually used, rather than to speculation alone. When demand for data rises, HNT is burned faster, and the supply tightens.[6], [7]
The mechanism that keeps miners paid forever
Halvings create a problem: as emissions shrink, there may eventually be too little new HNT to reward the Hotspots carrying data. Helium's answer, introduced in August 2021, is Net Emissions. The protocol watches how much HNT is burned each day and re-mints that amount on top of the schedule — recycled coins that do not count against the maximum supply.
The cap on this recycling is precise to eight decimal places: 1,643.83561643 HNT per day, verifiable on-chain. And because a single big burn on one day could distort the system, a smoothing formula spreads the effect over a week — yesterday's target counts for six-sevenths, today's burn for one-seventh. It is monetary policy written as code, published for anyone to check.[8], [9], [10]
The great migration
Helium began on its own purpose-built blockchain. On April 18, 2023, the network migrated to Solana, and HNT now lives there as a Solana token. The move traded a bespoke chain for the throughput and tooling of a larger one.
The network itself kept growing in a second direction too: alongside the original sensor network, Helium built a mobile network where Wi-Fi hotspots — including converted enterprise equipment from vendors like Cisco, Aruba and Fortinet — offload carrier traffic, with Hotspot owners earning HNT for it.[11], [12]
What the official sources leave open
UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed documentation does not name Helium's founders or tell the founding story. The docs are engineering documents — they describe the network as it runs, not who dreamed it up.
The emission table assumes the halving schedule continues as approved under HIP-20. Like everything in Helium, that schedule can be changed by community governance, so future issuance is a decision, not a law of physics.[4]
What this means when you hold or move HNT
HNT now lives on Solana, so moving it requires a Solana-compatible wallet, and small amounts of SOL are needed to pay Solana transaction fees. Older guides referring to Helium's original blockchain describe a network that no longer exists.
Data Credits are pegged to the dollar and are not transferable — they are a spending token, not an investment. If you see HNT and DC discussed together, remember they play opposite roles: HNT is earned and burned; DC is spent.

Can I swap HNT with no KYC?
No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of HNT. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.
Is swapping Helium on SwapRocket non-custodial?
Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends HNT to the wallet address you provide.
Which network does HNT use here?
SwapRocket supports Helium on the Helium network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap HNT?
SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the HNT amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
