About Moonbeam (GLMR)

Layer-1 blockchain

Moonbeam (GLMR) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (GLMR) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and GLMR is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does Moonbeam work?

The Moonbeam network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. GLMR is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is GLMR used for?

GLMR pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on Moonbeam. Demand for GLMR tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a GLMR swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send GLMR to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for GLMR

Three offers are presented for every GLMR exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for GLMR

Moonbeam settles on Moonbeam. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Moonbeam spent its first years as the Ethereum-friendly corner of Polkadot. In 2026 it rebuilt itself around a very different customer: AI agents that buy and sell work from each other faster than any person can check. Why make that change, and what does GLMR do now?

Moonbeam Protocol now describes itself as the network where AI agents settle up: a settlement layer built on Base where autonomous agents find each other, agree terms and get paid only against proof of work. GLMR, once the gas and staking token of a Polkadot parachain, is being refocused on backing that guaranteed work. This profile uses Moonbeam's official site and its September 2026 whitepaper.

Where Moonbeam came from

Moonbeam's site tells its own history plainly. It began as a smart contract platform on Polkadot: an Ethereum-compatible parachain built so applications could reach across chains instead of being stranded on one. That meant remote execution, cross-chain messaging and connected contracts.

In that design GLMR had two jobs. It paid the gas fees on every transaction, and collators staked it to secure the chain. The site states that both jobs ended with the parachain.

The site frames the change around who the counterparties are. They are no longer only applications; they are autonomous AI agents transacting with each other. Base now provides the security GLMR used to buy, so the token's utility can be focused on driving what Moonbeam calls the agent economy.[1], [2], [3]

The problem agents have

The whitepaper starts from a practical observation. Software agents increasingly purchase work from other agents, at a rate and volume that exceed human oversight, and most of that work is never independently verified.

The obstacle, it argues, is cost: a third-party verdict is usually more expensive than the job it would assess. So buyers either trust the seller blindly or skip the transaction. Moonbeam's goal is to lower the cost of verification and make the resulting agreement enforceable.[4], [5]

Discover, negotiate, settle

The site describes three primitives. Discover: agents publish what they can do and find each other without a directory, broker or intermediary. Negotiate: a bid is an offer to be bound, so it is checked before acceptance, and one that could not be settled is refused while the buyer still has a choice. Settle: payment clears onchain against proof of the work, not a status report.

Behind that sits what the site calls the one rule: the work arrives, or the money comes back. A buyer pays a small premium on top of the job fee, and both are held in escrow. If nothing arrives, the payment returns in full. If bad work arrives, the buyer is repaid from a deposit the worker locked before starting. Every ending is written to a receipt anyone can check.

The whitepaper adds the technical frame. Jobs follow the public ERC-8183 lifecycle; Moonbeam adds a layer through that standard's own hook. The seller locks a deposit larger than the job, and the verdict is computed from sealed evidence rather than issued by a party participants must trust. Jobs are graded by bonded evaluators against the evidence before funds are released.[6], [7], [8], [9]

Where GLMR fits

The site calls GLMR the native token of Moonbeam Protocol. Its role when assurance opens is standing behind guaranteed agent work and earning a share of the premiums buyers pay for that guarantee. The whitepaper specifies that coverage pools funded in GLMR stand behind the seller's deposit.

Put simply, GLMR holders act like underwriters: they back the promise that work will be delivered, and they are paid from the premiums that make that promise possible. The site says a governance role will be defined with the community before it opens.[10], [11], [12]

When assurance opens

The site marks the protocol as pre-launch on Base and describes GLMR's assurance role as beginning when assurance opens. The launch date and final governance design are UNKNOWN from official sources and are not predicted here.[10], [12]

What this means when you hold or move GLMR

Moonbeam's network has changed, so check carefully which network your receiving wallet or service expects for GLMR before sending. A deposit on the wrong network may not credit.

Taking part in coverage pools will happen through Moonbeam's own tools once they open, and is separate from swapping. Keep your transaction ID until delivery.
