About Ethena (ENA)

Crypto token

Ethena (ENA) is a crypto token on the ERC20 network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.

How does ENA work?

Ethena runs as a token on the ERC20 network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.

What is ENA used for?

Holders use ENA to participate in the Ethena ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a ENA swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send ENA to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for ENA

Three offers are presented for every ENA exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for ENA

Ethena settles on ERC20. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Ethena's USDe is a synthetic dollar backed by crypto assets and short futures positions. How does the ENA token govern that system, and why does Ethena govern by committee?

ENA is the governance token of Ethena, the protocol behind the USDe synthetic dollar. ENA holders steer the parameters of the system — what backs USDe, which strategies the protocol may use, and who sits on its Risk Committee — through a governance model that delegates most decisions to specialist committees. This profile explains that design using Ethena's official documentation.

The token behind the synthetic dollar

Ethena is a synthetic dollar protocol built on crypto rails. Its documentation is careful to say that USDe is not the same as a fiat stablecoin like USDC or USDT: USDe is backed with crypto assets and corresponding short futures positions, so the risks of interacting with it are inherently different.

ENA is the governance token of that protocol. According to the docs, ENA is used to govern the parameters of the system, including the composition of USDe backing, the introduction of new backing strategies, the future allocation of protocol revenue, and the membership and remit of the Risk Committee.[1], [2]

Where the revenue comes from

Ethena's overview explains that each unit of USDe is backed by assets held by the protocol, and that the backing stays productive: revenue is generated from a diversified set of strategies, including funding rates on delta-neutral basis trades in crypto perpetual and futures markets, funding rates on basis trades in non-crypto markets, lending revenue from overcollateralised on-chain DeFi lending, lending to institutional counterparties, and rewards on tokenised real-world assets.

That revenue is used in promotional and incentive programmes, including sUSDe — the protocol's savings asset — and certain partner reward programmes. The design goal the docs state is capital efficiency: USDe scales without the onerous collateral buffers required by other decentralised stablecoin designs.[3], [4]

sENA: staking as a governance signal

ENA has a staked form, sENA. Holders deposit ENA into the staking contract and receive sENA, an ERC-20 token representing their position. The contract is implemented as an ERC-4626 wrapper, and unstaking is subject to a cooldown period before ENA can be withdrawn.

The documentation frames staking ENA into sENA as signalling long-term alignment with the protocol, and as a route through which ENA holders participate in governance.[5], [6]

Governance by committee

Rather than a flat structure where every protocol-level decision goes to a vote of all tokenholders, Ethena delegates the vast majority of decisions to relevant committees, each with a clearly defined and siloed role. The primary role of ENA holders, initially, is to appoint committee members on a rotating basis.

The docs explain why: because Ethena's design requires off-chain infrastructure, fully on-chain governance is not practical at present. The committee approach prioritises practicality while adding external checks and balances, letting tokenholders delegate everyday decisions to sophisticated, expert-level stakeholders while retaining transparency.[7], [8]

The Risk Committee and the fee switch

Within that framework, the Risk Committee is a standing body responsible for setting risk parameters across the protocol: eligibility of backing assets, exposure limits, counterparty limits, and the activation conditions for mechanisms such as the Fee Switch. Its membership is itself subject to governance.

Proposals move through the Ethena governance forum and on-chain voting, with Risk Committee review where relevant. The docs describe the combination of token-holder voting, an active Risk Committee and implementation of approved parameters as what lets the protocol operate a diversified and dynamic backing portfolio.[9], [10]

One token, many chains

ENA is available across Ethereum and a number of supported chains through LayerZero, with governance accessible wherever ENA is held. That matters for holders: the token travels, but its governance rights travel with it.

Ethena's documentation also maintains an extensive risk section, custodian attestations, real-time dashboards and audit links, reflecting that a synthetic dollar's credibility rests on visible backing rather than on a promise.[11], [12]

When the fee switch activates

The Risk Committee controls the activation conditions for mechanisms such as the Fee Switch, which would direct protocol revenue toward ENA-related purposes. Whether and when those conditions are met is a governance decision, and its timing is UNKNOWN from public sources.

It is not predicted here.[9]

What this means when you hold or move ENA

SwapRocket lists ENA on Ethereum as an ERC-20 token. Because ENA also exists on other chains through LayerZero, check which network your receiving wallet expects before you swap, and keep a little ETH in an Ethereum wallet to pay network fees when you move the tokens later.

The governance and staking features described above apply to ENA you stake yourself through the protocol's contracts; ENA held in a wallet does not vote or earn automatically. Match the network in your quote to the receiving wallet and keep the transaction ID until the swap completes.
