About dYdX (DYDX)

Layer-1 blockchain

dYdX (DYDX) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (DYDX) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and DYDX is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does dYdX work?

The dYdX network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. DYDX is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is DYDX used for?

DYDX pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on dYdX. Demand for DYDX tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a DYDX swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send DYDX to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for DYDX

Three offers are presented for every DYDX exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for DYDX

dYdX settles on dYdX Chain. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Can a full trading exchange run with no company in the middle?

Most crypto exchanges are companies with servers. dYdX set out to be something else: a trading venue where the matching engine, the website and the data pipes are all open source, and where the company that wrote the software runs none of it. The DYDX token is what coordinates that machine — and the machine's design is more radical than most people realise.

An exchange that is a blockchain

The current version of dYdX, known as v4 or the dYdX Chain, is not a smart contract on someone else's network. It is its own layer-1 blockchain, built with CometBFT and the Cosmos SDK, written in Go and compiled to a single binary. It exists for one purpose: trading perpetual futures.

The documentation states the goal plainly: the chain was designed to be completely decentralized end to end. The protocol, the data indexer and even the front end are all open source, and — this is the unusual part — none of the components are run by dYdX Trading Inc., the company that built them.[1], [2], [3]

The order book lives in memory

Here is the design decision that makes dYdX different from most decentralized exchanges. The order book — the list of buy and sell offers — is not on the blockchain at all. Each validator keeps it in memory, off-chain, and gossips orders to the other validators. Only when two orders match does the trade go into a block.

That split is what lets a decentralized network behave like a real exchange. Blockchains are slow at updating millions of resting orders, but they are very good at agreeing on what happened. So dYdX puts the fast, throwaway work in memory and reserves the chain for the thing it does best: final settlement.

When a match happens, the validator whose turn it is to propose the next block adds the trade and starts a consensus round. If two-thirds or more of the validators by stake weight approve, the block is committed. Validators take turns proposing, weighted by how much is staked to them.[4], [5], [6]

The plumbing is open source too

A trading venue needs more than consensus. Traders expect fast charts, order history and live prices — the kind of data blockchains are bad at serving. dYdX's answer is the Indexer: a read-only layer that consumes data from a full node, stores it in Postgres and Redis, streams it through Kafka and serves it over ordinary web APIs.

The documentation compares the Indexer to the role Infura or Alchemy play for Ethereum, with one difference: like everything else in the dYdX Chain, it is completely open source and anyone can run it. Full nodes, which process every block but hold no stake and cast no votes, exist to support exactly this kind of infrastructure.[7], [8]

Governance holds the keys

Because no company runs the system, the parameters that shape trading — fee tiers, funding rate adjustments, liquidation settings — are controlled by on-chain governance. The documentation lists the module parameters that the governance module can update directly, and notes that the community decides them.

Security follows the same open pattern. The documentation says the protocol has been audited by Informal Systems, with further audits planned as more code is developed. The mainnet itself is a public network with the matter-of-fact name dydx-mainnet-1.[9], [10], [11]

Where DYDX fits

The DYDX token is the staking asset of this network. Validators' influence over consensus is weighted by the tokens staked to them, and governance power flows through the same channel. The token is, in effect, the voting share of an exchange that has no operator.

That makes DYDX a particular kind of asset: less a chip in someone else's casino, more a seat on the committee that runs the casino — if a casino could have no house.[6], [9]

What the official sources leave open

The documentation is written carefully around responsibility: it describes 'the applicable Governance Community' as the decision-maker for trading parameters, and stresses that dYdX Trading Inc. runs none of the components. What that separation means in practice, legally and operationally, is something the docs deliberately do not spell out.

UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed pages do not retell the project's founding history or the earlier versions of dYdX that ran on Ethereum. The v4 documentation speaks about the present architecture, not the journey to it.[3]

What this means when you hold or move DYDX

DYDX exists on its own chain, the dYdX Chain, and has also existed in other forms on other networks. Before sending, confirm which network the receiving wallet or exchange expects — a DYDX address on the dYdX Chain is not an Ethereum address.

Because the exchange's order book is off-chain and only matches settle on-chain, trading on dYdX feels closer to a regular exchange than to a typical DeFi app. But withdrawals and transfers still move at blockchain speed, so allow time for funds to arrive.

Zero added fees: SwapRocket does not add a platform fee, a minimum or a withdrawal charge — the rate you see is the rate you get. Blockchain network fees are shown in full before you confirm, and the final amount you receive is quoted up front.

SwapRocket does not add a separate fee or markup to the provider quote. SwapRocket may earn a commission from the liquidity provider when a completed swap is referred through our platform. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by SwapRocket. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

DYDX swap FAQ

How do I swap dYdX (DYDX) instantly on SwapRocket?

Pick DYDX as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. SwapRocket hands your order to the provider whose quote pays out the most at that moment, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no SwapRocket account needed.

Can I swap DYDX with no KYC?

No SwapRocket account or identity documents are needed to start a crypto-to-crypto swap of DYDX. The provider that executes the swap may still request identity verification or hold a swap for review under its own AML and sanctions policy, regardless of amount. Selling to a bank account goes through a regulated payment partner that verifies the payer; card purchases on SwapRocket are coming soon.

Is swapping dYdX on SwapRocket non-custodial?

Yes. SwapRocket never holds your funds. The provider that executes the swap receives your deposit, holds it only for the duration of the swap, and sends DYDX to the wallet address you provide.

Which network does DYDX use here?

SwapRocket supports dYdX on the dYdX Chain network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap DYDX?

SwapRocket adds no fee or markup to the provider's quote and may earn a commission from the provider on a completed swap. The provider's spread and any network cost it deducts on delivery are already reflected in the DYDX amount shown; the network fee your own wallet charges to send the deposit is separate. Spreads vary by provider, pair and size, so compare the quoted receive amount.
