About DigiByte (DGB)

Layer-1 blockchain

DigiByte (DGB) is a Layer-1 blockchain — a base network with its own consensus, validators, and native coin (DGB) used to pay fees and secure the chain. Developers build applications directly on it, and DGB is the asset that powers the whole ecosystem.

How does DigiByte work?

The DigiByte network is maintained by a distributed set of participants who validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. DGB is required to pay for transactions and, on many networks, to stake and help secure the chain in exchange for rewards.

What is DGB used for?

DGB pays network fees, can often be staked for yield, and serves as the core unit of value across apps built on DigiByte. Demand for DGB tends to track activity and adoption on the network itself.

How a DGB swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send DGB to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for DGB

Three offers are presented for every DGB exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for DGB

DigiByte settles on DigiByte. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

What does a blockchain look like when it refuses to let any single kind of mining machine run the show?

DigiByte is one of the old guard. It launched in January 2014, when most of today's networks did not exist, and it has spent the years since collecting technical ideas that bigger chains later talked about. Its most distinctive choice is simple to say and hard to pull off: instead of one mining algorithm, DigiByte runs five at the same time.

Born in 2014, built to keep ticking

DigiByte's own timeline starts with a fair launch through public mining in 2014, with a 0.5 percent premine that the project says went to giveaways and development. From there it describes more than a decade of 15-second blocks. The official site says the network has run without interruption since January 2014, with no deep reorganisations, governance forks or emergency hard forks. That is the project's claim, and it is a proud one for a chain this old.

The supply design borrows Bitcoin's mood with a different number: a hard cap of 21 billion DGB, released on a steady monthly-reduction schedule rather than in sudden halvings. The site stresses that there is no developer tax and no hidden allocation.[1], [2], [3]

Five algorithms, one chain

In 2014 DigiByte introduced MultiAlgo, splitting block production across five proof-of-work algorithms: SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, Qubit and Odocrypt. Each suits a different class of hardware, so no single mining industry can easily take over. The project's framing is that an attacker would need to overpower all five at once.

Odocrypt is the curious one. Added in 2019, it re-randomises itself every 10 days, which is designed to make it impractical to build specialised chips for it. In effect DigiByte keeps one of its five doors changing shape so that ordinary hardware still has a way in.

The same year DigiByte also shipped DigiShield, real-time difficulty adjustment that keeps block times steady when miners arrive or leave suddenly. It was an early answer to a problem many small proof-of-work coins had at the time.[4], [5], [6]

A habit of arriving early

The timeline reads like a list of upgrades other networks became known for. DigiByte activated SegWit in 2017 and added Dandelion++ in 2019, which routes transactions in a way that makes it harder to trace where they came from. Later it added DigiAssets for issuing tokens and records natively on the chain, and Digi-ID, a passwordless login system that signs a one-off challenge on your own device instead of relying on a central sign-in provider.

The newest chapter is DigiDollar, which the site describes as a native, non-custodial dollar-pegged stablecoin now live on mainnet. Users lock DGB as collateral to mint it and burn it to unlock their DGB, and the price is supplied by a group of independent oracles that co-sign each update. The official site is emphatic that minting happens only inside DigiByte Core and never requires sending DGB to anyone, a useful warning in a space full of lookalike sites.[7], [8], [9], [10], [11]

What the official sources leave open

UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed homepage does not name the founder or describe the original team, so this guide does not either. It also does not publish how large DigiDollar's collateral reserves are at any given time.

Claims such as uninterrupted uptime and "industry firsts" come from DigiByte's own site and are recorded as the project's statements.[2], [12]

What this means when you hold or move DGB

DGB runs on its own blockchain, so send it only to a DigiByte address on the DigiByte network. Fifteen-second blocks mean deposits usually confirm quickly, though the receiving service decides how many confirmations it waits for.

If you try DigiDollar, use the official DigiByte Core wallet. Anyone asking you to send DGB to an address to mint it, or asking for your seed phrase, is not part of the official process.
