About Basic Attention Token (BAT)
Crypto token
Basic Attention Token (BAT) is a crypto token on the ERC20 network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.
How does BAT work?
Basic Attention Token runs as a token on the ERC20 network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.
What is BAT used for?
Holders use BAT to participate in the Basic Attention Token ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a BAT swap works
Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send BAT to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.
Choosing a rate for BAT
Three offers are presented for every BAT exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.
Networks and addresses for BAT
Basic Attention Token settles on ERC20. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Can a browser pay people for their attention instead of quietly selling it?
Basic Attention Token was born out of an argument with the modern web. The man making it was Brendan Eich, who had already created JavaScript and co-founded Mozilla and Firefox. His new company, Brave, built a browser that blocks third-party ads and trackers by default, and then asked an awkward follow-up question: if the browser can see what you actually pay attention to, why shouldn't you be the one who gets paid for it?
The people who built the web, trying to fix its business model
Brave's white paper lists its two co-founders plainly. Brendan Eich is described as the creator of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla and Firefox; Brian Bondy, the lead developer, had worked at Khan Academy, Mozilla and Evernote. Few teams in crypto can say that the scripting language running on almost every web page came from their CEO.
That background explains the tone of the paper. It opens with a blunt line, "Digital advertising is broken", and walks through the costs readers already recognise: middleman ad exchanges, cross-device tracking, malvertising, slow pages and drained batteries. It cites over 600 million devices running ad blockers and publishers who had lost much of their revenue over a decade. BAT was the team's proposed repair: keep advertising, but rebuild it around privacy.[1], [2]
An economics paper hiding inside a token pitch
The detail most readers skip is also the most charming. The white paper's appendix is a serious piece of economics built around Ronald Coase, who won the 1991 Nobel Prize for showing that parties can bargain their way around a "social cost" when property rights are clear and transaction costs are low. Brave's argument is that today's ads are exactly that kind of social cost, dumped on users, and that a token can make the bargain cheap enough to actually happen.
It goes further and discusses a three-way Coasean bargain between users, publishers and advertisers, the arrangement BAT is designed to support. The paper opens its introduction with a quote from legal scholar Tim Wu, comparing attention to wheat, pork bellies and crude oil. Most token documents cite other token documents. This one cites Nobel economics.[3], [4]
Thirty days that ended much faster
The token launch was planned for 8 AM Pacific time on May 31, 2017, at Ethereum block 3,798,640, with a window of up to 30 days. The white paper set a raise target of as much as $24 million and a hard cap of 1.5 billion tokens. Of that, 200 million BAT went to Brave and 300 million to a user growth pool, with 1 billion available to the public.
The user growth pool is the quiet design decision that shaped everything after. It was reserved for early adopters at up to 5 BAT per user, and the paper promised that no new tokens would be created once it ran out. The team budget line is equally revealing: 58 percent of funds raised were set aside for a group of "just over 20 engineers" to build the system into the browser.[5], [6], [7], [8]
From ad receipts to a payments stack
In practice, Brave Rewards lets users opt in to see privacy-respecting ads in the Brave browser and earn BAT, which they can pass on to creators they like. The official site says BAT has grown since 2017 to tens of millions of users, over 2 million verified websites and creators, and thousands of ad campaigns, and it describes BAT as the first crypto application to pass 1 million users. These are the project's own figures.
The newer chapter is broader than ads. Brave's BAT Roadmap 4.0 describes a "transactional attention economy": a unified Brave Wallet, BravePay self-custody stablecoin payments, a Brave Rewards card that earns BAT on everyday purchases, and BAT buybacks funded by wallet, card and BravePay revenue. It also names a Creator Contribution Protocol intended to compensate creators when AI systems use their content, plus browser support for machine-payment standards such as x402. Early on, BAT was a way to pay for attention. The roadmap now pitches it as a way to pay people, and eventually software agents, for work on the web.[9], [10], [11], [12]
What the official sources leave open
UNKNOWN from official sources: the reviewed pages do not publish how much of Brave's revenue currently flows into BAT buybacks, or a firm schedule for the Boomerang Protocol, which the site describes as still in research and development.
Adoption numbers on the official site are the project's own and are reported here as such, not as independently audited figures.[13], [10]
What this means when you hold or move BAT
BAT started as an Ethereum token, so check which network your wallet and the receiving address expect before sending. Sending on the wrong network is the most common way to lose tokens.
BAT earned through Brave Rewards is handled inside the Brave ecosystem first. If you want to move it elsewhere, check the current withdrawal and custody options in Brave before assuming it behaves like BAT held in your own wallet.
