About Axie Infinity (AXS)

Crypto token

Axie Infinity (AXS) is a crypto token on the ERC20 network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.

How does AXS work?

Axie Infinity runs as a token on the ERC20 network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.

What is AXS used for?

Holders use AXS to participate in the Axie Infinity ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a AXS swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send AXS to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for AXS

Three offers are presented for every AXS exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for AXS

Axie Infinity settles on ERC20. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Axie Infinity popularised the idea that players could own what they earn in a game. How does its player-owned economy work, and what is the AXS token meant to do inside it?

Axie Infinity is a universe of collectible creatures called Axies, built around a player-owned economy where in-game assets are tokens players control. AXS (Axie Infinity Shards) is its ERC-20 governance and staking token. This profile is built from the official Axie Infinity whitepaper; the main axieinfinity.com site blocked automated access when checked.

What Axie Infinity says it is

The official whitepaper describes Axie Infinity as a universe filled with fierce, collectible creatures called Axies, featuring a player-owned economy in which players have complete ownership of their digital assets and can buy, sell and trade them like physical trading cards. The universe is described as always expanding through new games and experiences — some competitive and strategic, others built around quests, bosses and storylines.

The whitepaper frames the project's ambition broadly: to create an ecosystem of Axie games with community and player-owned economies as foundational pillars, delivering property rights to internet users "starting with gamers". It also calls Axie a digital nation where people come together to play, work and make lifelong connections, and says the game has taken on characteristics of a social network and an earning platform. The team describes the model as "Play-and-Earn": players have fun while working toward goals that can earn resources with real value because of an open economy and demand from other players.[1], [2], [3], [4]

How it works

Each Axie is built from body parts determined by a unique genetic code, and the whitepaper says the number of possible combinations is almost infinite. Different games can interpret those parts differently; in the first generation of Axie games, an Axie's body parts determine the cards or moves it can use in battle.

The whitepaper lists the main ways players gain resources: competing in battles for leaderboard prizes and Smooth Love Potions (SLP), breeding Axies to produce new ones with particular body-part combinations, collecting rare Axies such as Mystics and Origins, and onboarding newcomers. Breeding carries a fee that includes an AXS portion.

Openness is part of the design. According to the whitepaper, all art assets and Axie genetic data can be accessed by third parties, so community developers can build their own tools and experiences in the Axie universe. Marketplace activity and fees flow on the Ronin network, where the Community Treasury is publicly viewable on the Ronin block explorer.[5], [6], [7], [8], [9]

What AXS is used for

The whitepaper defines Axie Infinity Shards as an ERC-20 governance token for the Axie universe. Holders can claim rewards by staking, playing the game and taking part in key governance votes, and players can earn AXS through various games and user-generated content initiatives.

It sets out two goals for the token: to reward players for interacting with Axie Infinity while encouraging them to hold their tokens, and to decentralise ownership and governance of the game. A Community Treasury receives revenue — including 4.25% of all Axie NFT marketplace transactions and the AXS portion of the breeding fee — plus a portion of staking rewards, and the whitepaper says it will eventually be governed by AXS stakers once the network is sufficiently decentralised. It also notes the token was designed in collaboration with Delphi Digital.[10], [11], [12], [13]

Risks and open questions

The whitepaper is unusually direct about uncertainty. Its disclaimer calls Axie a bleeding-edge game incorporating unfinished, risky and highly experimental technology, and says development priorities, roadmaps and features are subject to radical overhaul. The document states it was last updated in November 2021, so some details may no longer reflect how the game operates today.

The token's design also carries an acknowledged tension: the whitepaper explains that staking issuance is high early on and drops over time, after which another funding source — potentially the Community Treasury — will be needed to keep staking attractive. The move to full community governance is described as gradual, and the whitepaper itself warns that projects have used "decentralization" as a ruse in the past.[14], [15], [16], [17]

What the official sources do not say

UNKNOWN from official sources: the whitepaper pages reviewed date from 2021 and do not describe the current state of governance voting, whether the Community Treasury is now controlled by stakers, or how current Axie games distribute AXS rewards today.

Nothing here predicts the token's future price or adoption.

What this means when you hold or move AXS

AXS exists on Ethereum as an ERC-20 and on Axie's Ronin network. Before sending, confirm which network your receiving wallet or exchange expects — a Ronin deposit and an Ethereum deposit are not interchangeable, even though the addresses can look similar. Network fees are paid in that chain's native asset.

Keep your transaction hash until delivery so you can trace it on the relevant explorer.
