About Arbitrum (ARB)

Layer-2 scaling network

Arbitrum (ARB) powers a Layer-2 scaling network that settles to Ethereum, processing transactions faster and far more cheaply than the base chain while inheriting its security. It's part of the infrastructure making everyday on-chain activity affordable.

How does ARB work?

Arbitrum batches many transactions off-chain and posts compressed proofs back to Ethereum, cutting gas costs dramatically. ARB is used within that ecosystem for fees, governance, and incentives that keep the network running.

What is ARB used for?

ARB holders interact with DeFi apps, NFTs, and payments at a fraction of mainnet cost, and participate in steering the network. It's a common choice for users who want Ethereum-grade security without high fees.

How a ARB swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send ARB to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for ARB

Three offers are presented for every ARB exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for ARB

Arbitrum settles on Arbitrum One. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

Why does Arbitrum use ETH for transactions while giving a separate token the power to govern the network?

ARB is the governance token of the ArbitrumDAO, not the fuel used to execute ordinary transactions on Arbitrum One. That separation is useful: applications can retain Ethereum-compatible fees while token holders vote on upgrades, treasury spending and the rules that constrain emergency authority. It also means holding ARB and using Arbitrum are different activities. Understanding the token therefore starts with governance, delegation and the constitutional safeguards around upgrades—not with the rollup's transaction speed.

A token for governing, not paying gas

Arbitrum Foundation documentation identifies ARB as an ERC-20 governance token minted by a contract on Arbitrum One. Holders can vote directly or delegate their voting power to another address. Voting is token-weighted, so delegation lets a holder participate without personally following every proposal while leaving the delegation revocable.

The rollup itself remains an Ethereum-compatible execution environment whose ordinary transaction fees are paid in ETH. ARB does not make the sequencer execute a transaction and is not required merely to use an application. Its documented role is to allocate decision-making power over the DAO, treasury and governed technology.[1], [5], [8], [12]

A constitution turns votes into bounded authority

The ArbitrumDAO Constitution distinguishes constitutional proposals, which can change core protocol software or governance rules, from non-constitutional proposals such as treasury grants. The proposal path combines public discussion, optional off-chain temperature checks and formal on-chain execution. Different thresholds and delays apply because changing the chain and spending treasury assets are not the same category of decision.

Two governor systems reflect that split. The Core Governor handles constitutional actions, while the Treasury Governor handles non-constitutional allocations. A timelock between approval and execution is part of the safety model: users and integrators can inspect a queued change before it takes effect rather than learning about it only after deployment.[2], [6], [4], [7]

Fast operations and slower settlement coexist

Arbitrum Nitro separates transaction ordering from deterministic execution. A sequencer gives rapid provisional ordering, while compressed transaction data is later posted to Ethereum and validators re-execute it. The official documentation distinguishes that soft confirmation from parent-chain safe and finalized states, which inherit their stronger assurance from Ethereum.

Users are not limited to the normal sequencer path. Arbitrum documents a Delayed Inbox on the parent chain as an alternative submission route if the sequencer is unavailable or refuses a transaction. This is a protocol property, not an ARB-holder privilege. Governance can shape the system around it, but the transaction path is enforced by rollup contracts and Ethereum settlement.[8], [9], [10], [11]

Emergency authority is visible rather than absent

The Constitution provides for an elected Security Council that can act more quickly than the normal governance process in specified circumstances. This is an explicit operational safeguard, not proof that every upgrade is automatically decentralized. The documentation separates emergency and non-emergency procedures and places the council inside the governance framework.

That design makes the relevant question measurable: who can vote, who has been delegated voting power, what proposal class is being used, and which delay applies before execution? Reading those records is more informative than assuming that possession of a governance token gives equal practical influence to every holder.[2], [3], [4], [5]

What decentralization still asks ARB holders to measure

The published rules establish how authority can be exercised, but they do not guarantee broad participation. Delegated voting power can become concentrated even when anyone is technically able to delegate or vote. The exact current concentration of effective ARB voting power, and how consistently smaller holders participate across proposal types, is UNKNOWN from the static sources reviewed here; those figures require dated on-chain governance data.

Arbitrum also continues to evolve its operational roles. The constructive test is whether sequencer, validation and upgrade authority become more distributed while preserving a usable recovery path. A constitution and public contracts make that progress inspectable, but they do not predetermine the outcome.[3], [2], [9]

What this means when you hold or swap ARB

Treat ARB as an Arbitrum One governance asset and ETH as the normal gas asset. Confirm that a receiving wallet supports Arbitrum One and verify the official token contract rather than relying on the ticker alone. Sending an Ethereum-mainnet representation or an unrelated same-name token to an Arbitrum-only deposit route can produce a network mismatch.

If governance is the reason you hold ARB, check whether voting power is self-delegated or assigned to a delegate; simply holding the token does not necessarily activate participation. Before relying on a transaction as settled, distinguish a sequencer receipt from the stronger parent-chain confirmation level required by the receiving service.
