About Aerodrome Finance (AERO)

Crypto token

Aerodrome Finance (AERO) is a crypto token on the Base network. It powers its project's ecosystem — used for things like access, governance, fees, or rewards — and trades freely against other digital assets.

How does AERO work?

Aerodrome Finance runs as a token on the Base network, which means it benefits from that chain's security and tooling while serving the specific role its project defines — for example governance votes, platform fees, staking, or in-app utility.

What is AERO used for?

Holders use AERO to participate in the Aerodrome Finance ecosystem and to gain exposure to the project's growth. As with any token, its value is tied to real usage and demand for what the project offers.

How a AERO swap works

Enter the amount you want to exchange, pick the asset on the other side, and SwapRocket queries every connected exchange partner at once. You choose an offer, paste the wallet address that should receive the funds, and send AERO to the deposit address shown. The partner executes the trade and pays out to your address — SwapRocket never holds your coins, and there is no account to create before you start.

Choosing a rate for AERO

Three offers are presented for every AERO exchange. The best rate returns the largest amount for the size you entered. The fastest route favours the partner with the shortest expected settlement time, which matters when the market is moving. The fixed rate locks the quoted amount for the duration of the order, so what you are shown is what arrives, at the cost of a slightly smaller payout. Floating offers can move with the market between deposit and settlement.

Networks and addresses for AERO

Aerodrome Finance settles on Base. Always send from and to an address on that network: a deposit sent over a different chain cannot be recovered by the exchange partner. When an asset exists on several chains, pick the matching network in the widget before copying the deposit address, and send a small test amount first if you are unsure.

A decentralised exchange lives or dies on liquidity, and paying for liquidity with token rewards often sends them to the wrong places. What if the people who lock the token decide each week where the rewards go?

Aerodrome is a decentralised exchange on Base built on the vote-escrow model pioneered by Solidly. AERO is its token; holders lock it to receive veAERO voting power, then vote every week on which liquidity pools receive new AERO emissions. This profile uses Aerodrome's official site and its open-source contract repository and specification.

An exchange built on familiar foundations

Aerodrome's contract repository describes the protocol as an automated market maker for EVM chains inspired by Solidly. Its pools use a constant-product design similar to Uniswap V2, and a router handles multi-pool swaps, deposits and withdrawals.

Trading fees are stored separately from pool reserves, which makes it possible to direct them to different participants. That separation is the foundation for the incentive system that sets Aerodrome apart.[1], [2], [3]

Locking AERO for a vote

AERO is the protocol's ERC-20 token. Holders can lock it in a vote-escrow contract and receive a veAERO position, represented as an NFT. The specification explains that voting power decays linearly over time as the lock approaches expiry, and that locking for longer gives more voting power.

Positions can be merged, split or extended, and a permanent-lock option keeps voting power from decaying. Locked AERO can be withdrawn once a normal lock expires.[4], [5], [6], [7]

Weekly votes decide where rewards go

Aerodrome runs on weekly epochs that begin at Thursday midnight UTC. Each epoch, veAERO holders vote for pools, and those votes determine what proportion of that week's AERO emissions flows to each pool's gauge.

Liquidity providers who stake their pool tokens in a gauge receive those emissions, but in exchange they give up the pool's trading fees to the gauge. Those fees, along with any incentives other projects add to attract votes, are paid to the veAERO holders who voted for that pool.[8], [9], [10], [11]

Why this design aligns incentives

The loop ties everyone's interests together. Voters are paid from the fees of the pools they support, so they have a reason to back pools that actually generate trading. Projects that want deep liquidity for their token can offer incentives to voters rather than paying liquidity providers directly.

A minter distributes emissions to the voting system and rebases to lockers, so long-term holders are partly protected from dilution. The contract set also includes an airdrop distributor that hands out permanently locked positions.[12], [13]

Transparent, open-source rules

Aerodrome publishes its contracts and a written specification openly, so the rules that govern emissions, voting and rewards can be read by anyone rather than taken on trust. The repository lays out each contract's role: pools and the router for trading, the vote-escrow and minter contracts for the token, and the voter, gauges and reward contracts that connect them.

This openness matters for a system that redistributes value every week. Liquidity providers can see exactly what they give up when they stake in a gauge, voters can see how and when fees and incentives reach them, and projects offering incentives can predict how their rewards will be distributed. Because rewards are paid in the epoch after a vote, participants also know the timing in advance.[1], [10], [11]

How the model holds up over time

Vote-escrow systems depend on sustained trading activity and on incentive markets staying healthy. How Aerodrome's balance of emissions, fees and voter rewards evolves as Base grows is UNKNOWN from official sources.

It is not predicted here.[9]

What this means when you hold or move AERO

AERO lives on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network. Make sure your receiving wallet supports Base and that the network shown in your quote matches it exactly before confirming, since tokens sent on the wrong network can be difficult to recover.

Locking AERO for veAERO, voting and providing liquidity all happen in Aerodrome's own app, and taking part is optional for a holder. A locked position cannot be withdrawn until its lock expires, so read the terms carefully first. Keep your transaction ID until delivery so you can trace it on a Base block explorer.
