What Bittensor is
Bittensor tries to turn machine intelligence into something a blockchain can pay for directly. The network is split into subnets. Each subnet defines its own task, such as text generation, data scraping or model training. Miners in a subnet compete to do that task well, and validators score their output.
Those scores feed Yuma Consensus, the mechanism that decides how newly issued TAO is shared out. It is designed to reward miners that validators broadly agree are useful, and to reduce the influence of validators whose scores drift away from everyone else's. The rules for each subnet are set by the subnet's owner, which makes the network a set of experiments rather than one fixed service.
TAO has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million, and issuance halves on a schedule, echoing Bitcoin's design. In 2025 the network introduced Dynamic TAO, under which each subnet has its own token and stakers choose which subnets to back, instead of a small group of validators deciding how rewards flow between subnets.
For a buyer, TAO is a native coin on the Bittensor chain. Holding it lets you stake to validators or subnets; how much any subnet's output is actually used outside the network varies widely and is UNKNOWN for many of them.
