Algorand was founded by Silvio Micali, an MIT cryptographer and Turing Award winner. Because selections are secret until the vote is cast, an attacker cannot know whom to target ahead of time. The protocol then reaches agreement on a single block per round, so a transaction included in a block is final: there is no chain reorganisation and no "wait for six confirmations".
On top of that base layer, Algorand supports Algorand Standard Assets (tokens created natively, without a separate contract per token) and smart contracts running on the Algorand Virtual Machine, which developers usually write in Python or TypeScript through official tooling. ALGO pays the small transaction fees and is what participants stake to take part in consensus.
