What Compound is

Compound began with a simple idea from its founders, Robert Leshner and Geoffrey Hayes: money sitting in a wallet could earn interest automatically if lenders and borrowers met in a shared pool run by code rather than a bank desk. Interest rates move with demand, rising when a market is heavily borrowed and falling when there is plenty to lend.

The protocol is best known for one decision in 2020. Instead of keeping control with the company, Compound handed protocol changes to COMP holders and distributed the token to the people actually using the markets. That launch is widely credited with starting the wave of "liquidity mining" that shaped much of decentralised finance afterwards.

The current version, Compound III (also called Comet), narrows each market to one borrowable asset, such as USDC, backed by a set of approved collateral assets. The design trades breadth for clarity: each market's risks are easier to see and manage. Changes to markets, parameters and the treasury pass through Compound Governance, where COMP holders or the addresses they delegate to propose and vote.
