What Aave is

Aave runs as a set of smart contracts. Lenders deposit assets into shared pools and earn interest; borrowers post collateral worth more than their loan and pay interest that rises as a pool gets more heavily used. If a borrower's collateral falls too far in value, anyone can repay part of the loan and receive some of the collateral at a discount. This liquidation process is what keeps pools solvent without a bank in the middle.

Aave started as ETHLend and relaunched under the Aave name, and in 2020 its original LEND token was migrated to AAVE at a rate of 100 LEND to 1 AAVE. The protocol has since been deployed on many networks, and its versions have added features such as isolated markets for riskier assets and efficiency modes for closely correlated ones.

AAVE holders govern the protocol: they vote on which assets are listed, how risky each is judged to be, and how the treasury is used. AAVE can also be staked in the protocol's safety system, which is designed to cover shortfalls if something goes wrong, in exchange for rewards. The Aave community also launched GHO, a decentralised stablecoin minted against collateral in Aave.

For a buyer, AAVE is an ERC-20 token. Holding it gives governance rights; voting and staking happen through Aave's own interfaces.
